Frank Bergum recounts early rural mail routes at Hinton

In spring 1906 Frank Bergum moved to Hinton and joined four Rural Routes out of the Hinton Post Office. He describes horse and wagon delivery, routes about 26 miles, and folk like Marin Mammen and James Crouch. He details winter substitutions, heavy snow, and his 600 am foot trip proving the 26 mile route possible. He later joined as carrier with a $78 monthly salary, then pursued exams for other routes, ending with an 1913 U S Coal Service Commission exam.

Retiring Rural Carrier Recalls Marsh Run and Service

A long reminiscence from Charles Vondra details a rural postal route past and the patrons who supported him. He recalls equipment, road conditions, and crews including Joe Phomp, Reverend Pads, and Wayne Sping, along with postmasters and substitutes who served through the 1930s and 1940s. He thanks patrons for decades of aid as roads improved from mud and snow to gravel and blacktop, noting winters of heavy snowfall and community efforts to keep the route moving.
