Fire hazard grows in Iowa as fall rains delay

Dry spell boosts fire risk across southern and eastern Iowa with Plymouth county reporting three fires this week. Red Cross Spends 3336 in Plymouth County Aid

Red Cross information director reports that in Plymouth County emergency relief totaling 3336.05 was provided after the June flood. Ten families received immediate aid, five families had home repairs, and more than 700 residents were vaccinated in typhoid inoculations. The chapter also ran a drought year office, aided stranded families, supervised a swimming program for 800 pupils from Plymouth and Sioux counties, and elected new officers at the annual dinner.

Corn Harvest Safety Clinic at Plymouth County Fairgrounds

A corn harvest safety clinic will be held at the Plymouth county fairgrounds in Le Mars at 8:00 p.m. on Friday October 9. County Extension Director Arlie A. Pierson says the event is county wide and educational, sponsored by the county Extension Service with farm machinery dealers’ cooperation. Norval Wardle of State College farm safety will assist and show a movie on corn picker accidents titled Hands Off. Wardle will discuss causes and prevention of harvest accidents. The Poultry Profits Show sits at the fairgrounds the day before, Thursday October 8, with a fall program planned.

Milr cus attorney involved in Le Mars school bus collision

L J McGivern, notable Milr cus attorney, collided with a school bus at First Street and Second Avenue NW in Le Mars last Thursday morning near 8:25. McGivern’s car struck the bus after his foot slipped from brake to accelerator, causing an estimated 45 damage to the bus. damage to his car was not reported.

Jacob W. Harper died September 26 at Plymouth county home aged 70 years 2 months 25 days. He was born July 1 1883 in Dow City Iowa and moved to Le Mars in 1938. He married Jennie Ryan in 1908 in Coleridge Nebraska and worked as a farm laborer. Funeral September 28 at St James Catholic Church with burial at Calvary Cemetery. Second Fire Near Oyens Destroys Treinen Barn and Hay

A second fire near Oyens destroyed a cattle barn at the Charles Treinen farm, 14 miles east of the church corner. Reported around 10 a.m., the Remsen and Oyens fire departments fought the flames as a south wind fed the blaze. The small barn north of the larger one contained 1400 bales of hay and was completely destroyed. Exact cause unknown though dry weather and prior tractor work near the barn contributed. Fire crews remained at the scene in the afternoon.

Damage Suit Slated For Trial This Fall

Peter A. Leistra county superintendent of Ovkiloon Iowa died Monday of a heart attack after a high supper at home. He owned a car involved in a foggy November 17 accident near Le Mars injuring Milo Price and killing a niece, prompting a suit against Leistra’s estate. Price, once a Westmar College instructor, was hospital-bound months and may recover slowly. The case, filed for over 80000, faced trial this fall before the defendant’s death. Also noted, Pvt Duane V Langle of Westgate Iowa arrived in Korea with the 2nd Infantry Division, part of a unit training for continued combat readiness after basic at Fort Riley.

Missing Garth Johnson Visited Audubon Co During Tour

Lanny Tuttle of Kingsley and Dave Eason of Le Mars served as Plymouth county's representatives on the Western Iowa 4-H Daily Tour held September 24 to 26. Fifty three 4-H boys and leaders from the western third of Iowa participated, with each county sending two delegates one leader and one dairying-minded youth, according to Jim Nuss, county extension youth assistant.

Albert A Kehrberg dies at 71 at Neptune area farm

Albert A Kehrberg of Stanton township died September 29 at his Neptune area farm after five months illness. Born January 10, 1882 in Stanton, he lived there all his life and was a retired farmer. He married Grace Dahly in Chicago on March 8 1919. Funeral services planned Friday October 2 at 2 pm at Mauer Funeral Home with Rev J Paul Stevens officiating. Burial in Stanton Township Cemetery. Surviving: Grace his wife two sons Boyd and John four daughters Mrs Shirley Hanna four grandchildren and two brothers Elmer of Le Mars Ben of Cherokee. two sisters Mrs Amanda Schwendemann of Fort Dodge and Mrs Lillian Stanley of San Antonio Texas. Missing Union township boy found safe after police tip

Garth Johnson, a 15 year old from Union township, vanished Saturday night prompting a police radio alert. He was located Sunday night visiting a friend in Audubon county. A former Union township church minister aided the reunion by signaling mutual friends and authorities. Johnson withdrew 300 dollars, bought a .22 pistol for protection, which police recovered and returned to the store. The store refunded the purchase as the buyer was underage, though the boy stands six feet two inches tall. No harm occurred.

Stucco Man Borrowed Boss Truck Faces Charge

Sheriff Frank Scholer went to Sheldon westaday to pick up Gerald Van Liar to face a charge of taking a motor vehicle without the owner s consent. Van Liar worked for Craig Construction Co of Sioux Falk doing stucco work in Le Mars. He quit his job but allegedly took the truck for another ride with a companion Al Hospers, causing bearings to burn out. The owners were notified and a complaint was filed.

Limited Clintland seed is offered for 1954 planting in Plymouth County. Six farmers will be chosen by the Agriculture Development Committee at Iowa State College to grow high quality certified seed under contract, delivered in new bags at no more than 1.50 dollars per bushel above the Chicago November price. The Le Mars Mutual Concert Association closes its annual membership drive and announces four artists for 1953 54. Teachers Gather for Tri-County Rural Education Institute

Hundreds of teachers from Cherokee Plymouth and Woodbury counties attended a rural pride oriented institute for high school teachers at the local high school. The program organized by the Department of Public Instruction featured superintendents Earle F. Berkler Christine L. Petersen Charles G. Hadley Harvey M. Kluchhohn and T. C.
