Fire damages Mercury car at intersection in Le Mars

At 1 57 pm Friday November 13 a 195 percent Mercury car owned by Bill McCormick pulling a trailer caught fire near the intersection of highways 3 and 5. McCormick attempted to move his outfit from home and wires burned out before reaching the intersection. The car required rewiring as the Le Mars Fire Department responded to the blaze.

Hospital Bazaar This Week At Sacred Heart

The Sacred Heart hospital hosts an annual bazaar in the basement recreation room over three days this week. The south basement door serves as the entrance. It opens at 8 a.m. on Thursday November 19 with Christmas gifts and foods for sale. Lunches available Thursday Friday and Saturday afternoons.

Snow removal praised by Le Mars mayor for crews

Mayor R J M Long praised Le Mars street crews for clearing snow after a weekend blizzard that dumped up to 12 inches. The workers began after midnight Friday and pressed on until streets were cleared, handling the heavy snowfall with diligence.

One Car Crash on Snow Covered Highway Near Le Mars

At 7 40 a m Thursday a westbound 1958 Ford driven by Thomas Wurth 19 of Remsen slid off a snow covered curve on highway 3 5 two miles east of Le Mars causing front bumper and right rear fender damage. Wurth owned the car and passengers included Dick Heidesch. sheriff's office investigated with no injuries reported.

John Ruhland 77 longtime Hinton farmer dies at home

John Ruhland born March 11 1882 in Hazel Green Wisconsin died Saturday at his home near Hinton after a long farming life in Stanton township. He married Elizabeth Sitaman February 5 1904 at Neptune Iowa and is survived by his widow four sons two daughters two sisters 33 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Funeral services Tuesday at St Josephs Catholic Neptune with burial in the church cemetery. The rosary was recited Sunday and Monday at the Wiltgen Luedtke funeral home Le Mars.

Miss Myrna Kloster Wins Local Fame and Wedding Dress Work

Myrna Kloster who moved from Le Mars to Worthington Minnesota became a subject of local fame after Wells Blue Bunny Dairy office manager Fred Lowry published a feature. She recently designed her sister’s wedding dress and attendants gowns in front of her eight year old niece Karen Schultz, who joked about Myrna's marriage and widowhood. The piece also recounts Karen’s reactions to family events, including a new baby brother and grandmother’s comment on a six year gap before the next child.

Akron uses inter-comm to keep ninth grader in class

Annelle Roy, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. David J. Roy, has been confined by back surgery since August. A Northwestern Bell inter-comm system allows her to attend Akron High School from home, connecting her bedside sun parlor to four classrooms. The arrangement keeps her up with classmates and she earned first six weeks honor roll.

Parsonage Hailed by Longtime Merrill Couple

Mr and Mrs John H Johnson cal Parsonage by the late Reverend Karl Kaupp. They farm southeast of Merrill after a lifetime of marriage. Brauch Pleads Guilty in Le Mars Liquor Raid Case

Clarence Blackie Brauch pled guilty in State Vs Brauch to keeping liquor where beer is sold after a police raid October 5, 1959. Judge L O Lampman imposed a $300 fine plus costs. Brauch’s liquor book was canceled and seized items including whiskey vodka and brandy were to be destroyed. The bowling alley raid was a hidden factor in the election and widely discussed.

Le Mars Ends Up Among Coldest US Towns

Le Mars recorded 24 below zero Saturday morning matching the second lowest in the nation. Phillips, South Dakota, at 25 below, was the lowest. Le Mars was Iowa’s coldest town with frigid days and several snow events noted through the week. Weather experts at Radio KLIEM reported the cold snap and old timers warned it could be the hardest winter since the 1820s.

Venice Dobson to Wed Douglas MacDougall in Denison

Police Court Fines In State And City Cases

In mayor court Joe Bohr of Alton was fined 20 dollars for speeding in a restricted zone and La Vern Wilson of ckensi North Da kota 14 dollars for truck speed. In city court Vernelle Ebert Marcus was fined 12.56 dollars for speeding. Henry Langstradt of Hull was fined for reckless driving after a Thursday car crash near the Blane Oil Station. Sheriff Frank Scholer and deputy Jim Meries conducted grand jury presence and inspected city jails.

Annual Legion Party Nov 21 at Walmer Post Hall

Realtor Bill Pew noted the modern home will open at a later date after the weekend turnout. Past census work began with field training and visits planned for farmers.
