Knights of Columbus initiation in Le Mars names new members

Initiation was held for twenty one new Knights of Columbus members on Sunday, November 4, in Le Mars. Nineteen from Le Mars council and two from Hawarden council were initiated through first to third degrees by local and visiting officers with Frank Barron of Sioux Falls confrerring the third degree. A banquet followed at St James parish hall with De. R. J. Joynt as toastmaster and Father Woels guest speaker.

Vander Well Elected State Safety Unit President

Herman Vander Well a driver training and public safety instructor at Le Mars High School was chosen president of the State Public Safety unit of the Iowa State Education Association in Des Moines last week. The meeting drew over 14 000 Iowa school teachers at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium on Thursday and Friday.

Gehlen Beats Rock Rapids 31 to 13 in Siouxland clash

Gehlen disposed of Rock Rapids 37 13 in a Thursday night game to keep its share of the Siouxland conference title alive. Gehlen hosts Akron next week and the winner will meet Hawarden for the crown. Elmer Menage scored on a 98 yard drive and a 40 yard end run. Denny Sheehan and Vollmar connected for a 32 yard score, Hoffman's punt return set up another, and Welter closed with a 37 yard TD run.

Younger Dr Shepard Wins Lasker Award in New York

Dr William P Shepard former LeMars boy and Met Life vice president received the Lasker Award at the 84th annual session dinner of the Lasker Foundation and American Public Health Association in New York for shaping American health through industrial health work education and government advising. Dr Dennis Salk also received an award for the Salk vaccine at the same dinner held November 1 at the Ambassador Hotel with other medical recipients.

Yankton and Westmar battle to 20 20 tie in thriller

Yankton College staged a dramatic rally from a 13 point deficit to tie Westmar 20 20 on a Saturday night. Don Gall scored on a 5 yard plunge set up by a late 60 yard drive. Westmar opened with a 13 0 lead, Bob Braunschweig recovered a fumble, and Sampson Mahuthi and Jim Englehardt produced big plays for Yankton. Westmar led 13 0 early, Yankton answered with two touchdowns, then Westmar tied late before the final stalemate. Each side finished with strong yardage and one game remaining.

Remsen Bank Names New Bookkeeper From Vet Ranks

Darwin Majeres of Le Mars, a 1956 Gehlen high school graduate, has taken over as bookkeeper at the First Trust and Savings bank in Remsen. He succeeds Donell Engelskracht, who leaves for a California position after three years with the bank. Majeres is the son of Anthony Majeres of Te Mars, with roots traced to the Majeres family of Te Mars and Fredonia township. Dry spell ends as rainfall rise predicted for year

Wealthier observers forecast rainfall for 1956 nearing the low average of 16 inches as more storms loom. Recent wet spell brought moisture with total rainfall at 1.58 inches, most falling last night amid 38 degree low and 0.76 inch gusts. Farmers welcomed moisture though corn was light. James Goudie Dies at 83. Le Mars Farmer Funeral Set

James Goudie a retired farmer died after illness in a hospital. Services are 2 p m Monday at Wiltgen-Tuedthe funeral home with burial in City cemetery. He was born May 30 1881 in Le Mars and farmed in Union township Plymouth County. He retired two years ago and moved to Le Mars. He married Miss Anna Marie Fokin in Sioux City September 8 1944. she survives. The body is at Wiltgen-Eued the funeral home.

Suit Over 1955 Car Crash Seeks 23800 Damages

Catharina Meyer as executrix of Gerrit J. Meyer seeks 23800 in district court from Phillip Francis Held and H Russel Held over a December 12, 1985 crash on Highway 75 near Hinton that killed the deceased.
