Soil insect control and planting notes for corn

Soil insect control remains popular with aldrin and heptachlor as primary insecticides. Apply at two pounds per acre broadcast or one pound per acre in the row, mix granules with soil, and harrow to mix. Seed corn beetle, seed maggot, wire worms, and cutworms are discussed with treatment guidance and timing for optimal germination around 30 to 40 degrees F soil temperature. Planning depends on moisture and temperatures after June 5, with sorghum timing near May 24 in Plymouth County.
