Hartley Plane Crash Claims Two Local Men in Instrument Flight

Radio KLEM reported that Glenn Schipper, 32, and Lambert Fletcher, 38, both of Hartley, were killed when their Cessna crashed during instrument flying on the Hernan Fokken farm two miles north of Hartley. Cause unknown. The plane belonged to Fletcher and was demolished. The Schipper family was notified, and the body taken to Vander Ploeg Funeral Home. Schipper, a Hartley native, ran Culligan Soft Water Service in Sheldon and was a longtime pilot who owned a plane in Sheldon.

Death of Mrs A J Sible prompts funeral service

Mrs Oliver Ward of Le Mars received word from Denver on Tuesday of the death of her sister Mrs A J Sible. Funeral was held today from St Philomena's church. Mrs Sible's husband had died earlier. Born in Hope, she was raised there. Survivors include four children, grandchildren, and a sister Mrs Oliver Ward. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and a sister.

Fry Is Fixing Up Building In Rome

Passersby noticed work at the rear of Rome’s Tap owned by Kenneth Fry. The project is described as replacing the old back wall with a new one. No building plan changes are contemplated and there is no indication of removing the jewelry store from the First National Bank Building. The bank confirmed Fry has a lease and will not be moved for rumored enlargement.

Le Mars City Renews Pied Piper Rat Control Contract

In a Tuesday night meeting Le Mars officials renewed the pied piper contract for rat control at the city dump. Rats have caused damage near dumps and nearby properties. The shift from volunteer rifle plinking to formal control reflects safety concerns about old methods. The club Debonair beer permit corrections were addressed and approved. A future review of fogging with DDT to combat insects will be considered, given safety warnings about potential harm to people and especially children.

Overnight Girl Scout Camp Out At Hills Camp

New Fire Ladder For City Truck

The Le Mars fire department received a new aluminum extension ladder for the city’s number one fire engine. Cost about 4000 dollars plus 25 dollars for mounting. Ladder is 26 feet collapsed, 65 feet extended, raised by hand operated block and tackle. Firemen say it will meet needs for rescues at height and fighting fires.
