Mechanic killed in car train crash near Sioux City
Orla Cooper, mechanical supervisor at Otis Radio Co. in Hawarden, died when his car struck a southbound Great Northern train near the Million Dollar Corner in Sioux County. A 9-year-old boy suffered minor injuries. Cooper’s family awaits word on two sons serving in the military. Funeral plans are pending with services at Wiltgen-Luedtke. Survivors include his wife Metta, two sons James and Robert, a daughter Mrs. Norman Lawin, a grandson, and five sisters and three brothers.

Le Mars police officer for 14 years M Wanderscheid 64 died Saturday at Sacred Heart Hospital after a heart attack. A lifelong Plymouth County resident he had left the force a month earlier and just returned from Burbank California with his wife. Survived by widow five sons and six daughters in Iowa California. Funeral at St Joseph Catholic Church with burial Calvary Cemetery.

Man Survives Car Plunge After Water Flood Traps Driver
Bill Williams of Nessius Conoco Service station on Highway 75 survived when his Hudson sedan slid into a water pool 600 yards north of the bride around 6 30 Sunday night. The car rolled and submerged five to six feet. Williams escaped by finding a front door that opened after three others clogged with mud. He swam free as the vehicle nearly vanished under flood water near an abandoned county road junction south of Rey Rounds' home. A Sioux City man drowned here a year earlier in a similar incident. Williams blamed soft shoulders from recent rains for pulling off, while noting the accident happened without warning. Williams and his wife were elsewhere on vacation.
