The Kellner farm suffered the worst, with cattle moved to Sioux City and chickens stripped of feathers. A hired man warned of danger, forcing a family into a cave dug in the cellar while the tornado passed. Survivors described a chilling vacuum that sucked air from lungs, with doctors later noting fatalities from chest injuries in similar storms.
