Merrill Seeks Natural Gas Access in Federal Hearings

BD F Ketchen district manager of Iowa Public Service Company says officials are before the Federal Power Commission in Washington this week to obtain natural gas for Merrill and 28 other Iowa towns and one in South Dakota. About 300 communities seek gas and Northern Natural Gas can supply only part of the demand while the commission studies capacity, costs, and need before issuing certificates of convenience and necessity. Separately Remsen Bell Enterprise reports Bellmyer Motors in Remsen has closed, Plymouth-Chrysler agency terminated, and shop assets will be sold privately.

Rain Record Sets Six Inches in Plymouth County

O E Fristad treasurer of the Plymouth County Rain Increase Association reports about 9500 dollars on hand and 11200 needed as donations come in from Farm Bureau members. Checks should be made out to Rain and mailed to First National Bank Le Mars or any local bank. Weather notes say 1956 is extremely dry with only 6.0 inches since January 1 1955, while the region around Plymouth county has seen rain fall but not enough to relieve drought.

Death of Harry Jones in Le Mars at 83

Harry Jones died at Sacred Heart hospital in Le Mars on July 7 after a monthlong illness. A retired grocer, he resided at the Union Hotel and was born November 1 1873 in Schullyburg Wisconsin. He lived in Le Mars 44 years and married Psiella Forsythe August 2 1902 at Butt Iowa. Funeral services set for July 10 at 2 00 pm at the Mater funeral chapel with Rev Roy Gildner officiating. Burial in the city cemetery. Survivors include son Robert of Le Mars and two granddaughters. brother R F Jones of Pears and aster, California, and sister Elizabeth Penhals lengen of Los Angeles. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and a sister.

Monsignor Theobald to be Invested as Domestic Prelate

The Rt Rev Magr George Theobald will receive the robes of a Domestic Prelate from Most Rev Joseph M. Mueller at St Marys Church Remsen on Tuesday morning July 17 at 1 oclock. Very Rev Edward Vollmer will preach the sermon. Theobald became Domestic Prelate on May 31 by Pope Pius XII. Investiture to be a Solemn High Mass with nephew Father Duane Theobald presiding.

Boy Killed In Crash Near Hull

Milton D Vant Hull ten died Friday evening after the car he drove collided with a gravel truck two miles east and three miles north of Hull Iowa. The truck driver Herman Van Donge twenty of Sions Center Iowa was uninjured. Investigating officers said the Vant Hul vehicle was southbound and the truck northbound on a gravel road when they collided near an intersection around 5 30 pm Both vehicles went into a ditch. Vant Hul died of a broken neck. He was the son of Mr and Mrs William Van t Hul of Hull and survived by three brothers Elmer of Sioux Center Lloyd and Donald of near Colton and two sisters Mrs Leonard Nieuendo of Minnesota and Miss Diane Van Hul of Hull.

VanderHam-Mauer Engagement Linked to School Plans

Doris Mae VanderHam daughter of Mr and Mrs Elmer VanderHam of Ireton announces engagement to Virgil Mauer son of Mrs Rosetta Mauer and the late Mr Mauer of Wall Lake Town. Becker Rites Held for 84 Year Old Near Le Mars

Funeral services were held for Frank Becker 84 at the Seney Methodist church with Rev M L Metcalf and Rev Cannady officiating. Burial followed in Seney cemetery. Becker, born February 12 1872 in Illinois, had lived here since age 11. He married Jeanette Reer in Seney December 19 1900. she died in 1953. Survivors include son Floyd of Le Mars daughter Mrs Walter Woodhouse of Hudson five grandchildren and one great grandchild. Dr and Mrs D O Kime left for their new home at Kansas City. Dr Kime has been president of Westmar College for 25 years retiring effective July.

Collision at Sieverding-Waltz corner injures no one

A westbound 1950 Chevrolet driven by Barbara Schilmoeller struck the last car in a halted line at the Sieverding-Waltz traffic fight in front of Club Cafe at 4:30 p.m. Saturday June 30. No damage to Wayne Schwartz's 1954 Ford truck was reported. Front end damage to the Chevrolet not estimated. At Plymouth Street 6th Ave SW Arthur Goudy in a 48 Pontiac turned East, colliding with Myron Van Driel's turning southbound truck causing 4150 damage to the latter.

Fire Fiends and a Cherokee Blaze Retold From 1887 Times

Reprint notes recount Cherokee firehouse efforts during a major blaze at the Konardy building scene. Le Mars fire laddies aided the Le Mars crew, with the Cherokee Fire Company halting spread after two cisterns operated. The March 3 1887 Times story is presented by Ene Himes in the damaged Cherokee Daily Times. The Sanford museum houses the wad paper.

Fire Crews Battle Grass and Wood Fires in Local Areas

Le Mars firefighters responded at 8 p m Saturday to a grass fire along Neptune road caused by a discarded cigarette. A convoy followed the truck causing minor traffic delay as it halted on the roadway. July 4 brought a separate call when two Le Mars units fought a cottonwood wood blaze at the Lenihan home near New Deal park after fireworks residue sparked a pile. Fire Chief Don Dambrin said the wood pile was destroyed but flames were contained.
