Town trappers are reminded that the spring beaver season will open February 1 and run through March 15. The entire state is open to beaver trapping during this period. Severe damage to tie trees and saplings and beaver dams made the season favorable for trappers as beaver pelts reach prime condition in late winter and early spring.
The Merrill Blue Ribbon 4 H Club met January 14 1954 at the home of Joan and Jim Schoenrock. Members answered roll call with Pounds of Protein per Pig Until Market. They discussed old and new business and decided to sell cards to raise club funds. The topic was Nutrients for Livestock. Reporter Linda Van Evem.

A spray consisting of 142 in 2 pounds of 25 percent wettable lindane powder plus 2 pounds of household detergent in 24 gallons of water will do the job. Thee farmers with early baby pigs can supply needed iron and copper by providing clean sod for the pigs to root around on. This will prevent Thumps or Anemia. A special Cattle Feeders Day at Iowa State College on Thursday Feb 18 is expected to reveal improved cattle feeding supplement. Anyone who is interested may attend. A fine example of sincerity was displayed by the new Farm Bureau board members last Thursday. It was the coldest day of the year but nine of thirteen new members were present for the all-day training school for new board members. Crop Improvement Day will be held at Iowa State College. February 1. Iowa farmers are urged to attend the all-day meeting on the College Campus. Immediately after the above date, the 193 Iowa Corn Yield Test bulletin will be available at the office. Single copies are free for the asking. Mrs Josephine Arendt entertained the Chat Or Bid Club at a one o'clock luncheon at Cora’s on Wednesday. The group played contract after luncheon in the home of Mrs Arendt.

Mrs MaeKinzey died after long illness at her home in Kingsley. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 1:30 p m at the residence and 2 p m at the Methodist church with Rev Everett R Mayer officiating. Burial followed in Kingsley cemetery under Dickinson funeral home direction. She was born October 4 1883 in Correctionville and married Roy Kinzey March 5 1900s. Surviving are the widower three brothers and three sisters and two sons Clayton and Vernon and a daughter Mrs William Conry, all of Kingsley and surrounding areas.
A 1912 Brunsville scene shows the town before a fire with the Bank of Brunsville in view and Jobe Kennedy in the doorway. Nearby are Jobe Hauschild general store with Hanschilds and Fred, Frerich Wilkens meat market, John H. Dirks hardware, Barnes Lukens pool hall and restaurant, Farmers Bank then First State Bank, a buckskin team and buggy, and Ed Johnson’s ceeta house and implement shop across the street.
The Brunsville bank marks twenty fifth year since organization from the Bank of Brunsville dating to 1910. C B Elsen and W G Bolser built the building, later sold to Henry Harms and sister Katherine, then survived a 1931 fire that destroyed the vault. The bank weathered hard times while keeping customers served and notes paid on time. A note from President Harms urges prudent lending and a community celebration with local talent and potential hall use.
Revival meetings in Le Mars at the Free Methodist church run each evening from Friday January 29 to February 7 with Rev Edwin L Foot as evangelist. Foot has led Washington DC ministry for eleven years and is described as successful. Everyone is invited. The Presbyterian Women organization held its general meeting at the church Tuesday evening led by Don Wormby with Mrs Hear Fitzs, president, presiding. Carter Patty displayed European country pictures from his two years in Germany with the U S Army. A coffee hour followed with numerous hosts and hostesses assisting.
Merrill community groups sponsor a benefit dance on Saturday night February 6 at the Community Hall. Music will be donated by the Lake band and all proceeds go to the polio drive led by Artenewecott. The event is chaired by Polio Drive chairman and emphasizes local civic support.
A poem by Roy Durham of Le Mars reflects on the upcoming school year. It humorously describes bus rules, early bedtimes, weather, and the mix of big, small, and in between children, praising bus drivers for safety and predicting a smooth year if no accidents occur. The verse ends with a nod to the driver and a blessing. Also notes a luncheon hosted by Mr. D C Lenihan for Mrs. Joe Kass of Santa Ana with former neighbors attending.
The Elgin Emeralds held January 18 1954 at the home of Phvins and Pats. President Sher Rees opened the meeting and the group recited the 4H pledge. Roll call asked members to name the most beautiful thing they have seen. The club voted to send funds to the poetry fund and discussed goals and annual projects. A lunch was served by hostesses and the mother.
A joint meeting of the Amnunistion Circle of St Michael's Guild Kingsley decided to sponsor a stage show on Sunday February 14 at St Micha ls Hall to raise funds for the general fund and cemetery landscaping. The program features Johany White and a variety of acts with a popularity contest to select a queen. Tickets go on sale from local businesses with prices 25 cents for children, 75 cents for adults. advance sales will support refreshments and a luncheon. In case of severe weather, the show will be rescheduled and tickets honored later.
