A citywide crime trend report cites Le Mars as maintaining fewer police per capita than most communities. The 1957 census put Le Mars at 1.09 officers per 1000 residents, below the national median of 1.80 and below the 1.71 median for towns under 10 000. Water Price Raise To Be Moderate In Le Mars

Le Mars city council, after rejecting a new water price schedule from the Iowa Public Service Company, will consider a revised schedule at the January 20 meeting. Rudy Adjer says the new raise is designed to be more moderate to avoid previous objections. Council could again reject if the proposal remains excessive.

Merrill Crash Victim In Hospital After Ice Slip

Miss Lelia Johnson 60, Estherville insurance agent for New York Life, is in good condition at Sacred Heart hospital after a two car crash in Merrill. She sustained chest injuries, with x rays pending, after a late Sunday crash on icy Highway 75. Passenger Mrs James James, 65, treated for knee and released. Other driver James Walsh 38 Sioux City and passenger Bruce Ross 31 Sioux City had neck injuries and were taken to St Josephs. Walsh charged with failing to keep vehicle under control. Damages: Rambler about 700 dollars.

A new Le Mars to Hawarden star route proves valuable to Hawarden and surrounding areas. The truck runs six days a week, reaches Hawarden at 7:30, and provides extra mail to city and rural carriers that day. It replaces late deliveries from central South Dakota points, Twin Cities, Des Moines, Omaha, and other centers, improving next day delivery for Des Moines and Chicago newspapers.

Schools To Change LeMars Public Bus Routes

Le Mars Public Schools will reverse all bus routes except No 8 stem route starting second semester. New schedules will be given to rural riders on Thursday January 22 and mailed to absent students' families on Friday January 23 so all parents are informed before Monday. Call the Superintendent at 263 before Saturday January 24 noon if a rider does not receive the schedule. The change grants later pickup times for riders previously picked up early in the first semester.

Funeral Held for Joseph Amann in Sioux City

Funeral services were conducted Saturday at the Nelson-Berge north side funeral home for Joseph Amann who died after being struck by a car Thursday. Rev L Verne K Clark officiated burial occurred at Graceland Park Cemetery. License Deadline Is Jan 31 County Effort Intensifies

County Treasurer Bob Kelly said the office is busy issuing licenses. The final day without a penalty is January 31. About 7,400 county cars must be licensed and roughly 5,000 have purchased 1959 plates. Those ordering by mail should include car registration and add 2 cents for postage.

Farm Bureau Women’s Committee Installations at Plymouth Office

The Plymouth County Farm Bureau Women’s Committee met January 1959 at the Farm Bureau office. Past Chairman Mrs. RC Hodgson led an impressive installation. new officers and chairmen were installed. Mrs. ME Atkinson opened with a prayer. Roll call listed 19 committee members, 5 special chairmen, 8 library chairmen and 9 scholarship chairmen. Perry township won an award for most points on check sheets from last year. Plans included continued use of check sheets, adoption of a girl from Glenwood School, library reading program, and book reviews to boost reading interest. Committee discussed scholarship rules and distributing application blanks. Upcoming events include Farm Bureau Women’s Day, a trip to the legislature, and a baking contest. Mrs Vernon Released From Hospital After Parking Lot Fall

Mrs Vernon of Brunsville was injured when a door opened as a 1954 Ford driven by Mrs Donna Haage turned in a Le Mars parking lot near the REA building. She struck her head on the surface, bruised, and was taken to Sacred Heart hospital by Lokens ambulance at 3 30 p.m. Saturday January 10. She was released the next day.

Farm House Breakin Near Kingsley

Thieves broke into the Utecht farm west of Kingsley last Thursday evening while Mrs Emilie Utecht and sons were away. A television set clothing and jewelry were taken. Sheriff Frank Scholer investigated and noted similar attempted break ins at other nearby farm homes.
