E W Rogers of the Le Mars chamber of commerce reports that the city has 18 years with no traffic deaths, a record he claims is the best in Iowa and possibly the nation. He credits public school driving training and stable home ownership, notes perpetual positive publicity, and proposes a Stonehenge style memorial using sandstone pillars later replaced by marble.
The Le Mars chamber of commerce reelected Pete Forsberg as president for 1959 and reappointed E. W. Rogers as manager and Earl Moir as treasurer. Directors elected by bureaus include Civic Mennen Kalas Mauer. Agricultural Pew Moss Cass Jr. Retail Parker Ross Bowers. Industries Wolbers Collins Veale. Young people join agricultural 4 H clubs from over 20 projects offered by the state 4 H club office at Iowa State College.
The Towa Crop Service reports very dry soil around Le Mars and Primghar, the driest in the state, with 1959 crops relying on rainfall. Despite nationwide snowfall, Le Mars and Primghar received little moisture, though a blizzard brought 11 inches of snow elsewhere. Temperatures dipped to 10 below yesterday, then warmed after morning lows.

The Plymouth county basketball tournament runs January 5 to 10 in Akron with boys and girls games daily. Admission is 50 cents for adults and 25 cents for students, finals priced at 75 and 40 cents. Tournament manager is Superintendent O Scranton.
Dr and Mrs Thomas Eyres of Vermillion South Dakota marked their 25th wedding anniversary with an open house at their home on Sunday December 28 Relatives attending included Mr and Mrs Rodney Eyres and family and Calvin Eyres Mrs Mildred Eytes Caroline Eytes Mickey Eytes and others from Le Mars Sioux City Hinton Kingsley and surrounding areas
Sandra Sue Shields and Kermit L Peters were married at 4 PM Friday December 26 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spencer Iowa. The bride is the daughter of Everett Shields of Dickens and the groom the son of Vernon Peters.
Charles Allan Chuck Ross born March 1 1944 in Cherokee died at a farm near Hinton after his family moved there eight years ago. He was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran in 1958 and active in 4 H. Funeral services were held December 16 at Boothby Funeral Home and Trinity Lutheran Church with burial at Oak Hill Cherokee. Pallbearers included family and friends from Brainard Minnesota Le Mars and Hinton. He leaves parents and three older brothers Gary Robert William with grandfather Dane Ross of Cherokee and grandmother Mrs Josephine Walks of Courtenay.
Susan Delaney Ward was received here as the death of Susan, daughter of Mr and Mrs Don Delaney of Newark New Jersey, who died of spinal meningitis on December 26. Mrs Delaney, formerly Dorothy Deedrick, daughter of Res and Mrs J S Deedrick of North Bergen New Jersey, attended High School here in her junior year while living with her grandmother Mrs W B Parkinson during her illness.
Anarrupe Weems Marie and Philip Carl Heary of Con Neth Carolina plan marriage at the Clerk's Office Le Mars. Holiday traffic expected. snow not forecast though cold weather to persist over the weekend.
Mr and Mrs Peter J Wilhelm of Struble announce the engagement of their daughter Mildred Ann to James L Hammen son of Mr and Mrs Le Roy Hammon of Kingsley. Mildred is a Le Mars Central High School and Cliff College graduate who teaches in Primghar public schools. A June wedding is planned.
Le Mars Savings Bank of Le Mars Iowa helped the needy during the holidays by funding CARE packages. Each 22 pound parcel contained dried milk cheese flour and meal with the bank’s name and address on the label. CARE reports distribution to refugees and disaster victims in Egypt Germany Hong Kong India Iran Israel Italy Korea and Yugoslavia. Donations may be sent to CARE office Milwaukee Wisconsin.
Funeral services were held for M M Griepenburg 74 a prominent Remsen businessman Wednesday at St Pauls Evangelical Lutheran church with Rev Paul Wuebben officiating Burial was at Reiser Cemetery He had health problems for two years Griepenburg born December 27 1884 in Holle Ostfriesland Germany came to America on a ship and settled near Kingsley He studied at Kingsley high school University of Iowa 1907 and served as school superintendent then studied law at University of Michigan He lived in Remsen since 1913 working in insurance and public service He served as city clerk and on the school board for 27 years Married to Mabel Larson of Sioux City Survivors include his widow two daughters two grandchildren and a brother all in Remsen Le Mars and Minneapolis He was a member of the Masonic Order Abu-Bekr Temple and honored in May 1988 for 50 years in the order.
Nine Le Mars boys trained in the buddy plan for the United States Navy on June 3. Four planned Christmas leaves show up at Le Mars homes from separate bases. Names include Keith Wills, Dave West, Larry Lang, Harold Kuck, and others serving at Brunswick, San Diego, Gigant Lakes, Philadelphia boatsman school, Long Beach, Virginia, and Port Huemene California. Some are due back to school or next assignments. James Flewelling’s address could not be learned.
Shirley Ann Sanow and Stanley Nilles, both of Remsen, married at St Marys church in Remsen with Rev David Hogan officiating. Bride wore white satin gown. attendants wore quartet silk gowns. Reception at Knights of Columbus hall. dance at Avalon. Groom recent Korea veteran, to reside in Kingsley after a brief honeymoon.
Mia and Mrs Leroy Mesner celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary on Sunday evening in Zuims Iowa. Guests included Mr and Mrs John Gerder of Le Mars, Mrs Sophia Mesner and Mr and Mrs Leslie Dou and daughter of Paullina, Mr and Mrs Delbert Appeldorn and family of Paullina, Mr and Mrs Rhiney Tesch and Mrs Raymond Appeldor and daughter of Paullina. The evening featured visiting, card playing, a money gift, and a hosted lunch as guests wished the couple many more anniversaries.
An estimated 50 damage was done to the grill and hood of Dale Donlin s 1955 Chevrolet parked about 30 feet east of 3rd Ave SW for St. The car was struck by a 1983 Ford driven by Richard Hettner at 2 30 a m Tuesday according to a police report. Donlin was home for the holidays from Town City where he attends finalype school.
