Two Men Die In Plymouth County Crash Near James
Coroner H Luken reports a fatal highway crash on route 75 near James in Plymouth County. Alfred J Handegard Jr., 20, of South Sioux City Nebraska died from a fractured neck after being thrown from a car that struck a ridge abutment. John Reed, 17, also of South Sioux City, died at St Joseph Hospital after surgery for a mangled leg and other injuries. Robert Reed, 19, driver, was not seriously hurt. The crash was investigated by James Mertes, Richard Luitjens, and Coroner Luken.

Conservation Reserve Sign-up Time Is Fixed
The extension of sign up for soil bank conservation reserve contracts runs from March 18 to April 13, with no change to the March 8 deadline for corn and spring wheat acreage reserve agreements. The change was ordered by the Department of Agriculture to ease workloads at county ASC offices and allow more time to explain age age reserve and conservation pacts. Acreage reserve agreements are one year. conservation contracts span three, five, or ten years. The Lincolnettes 4-H club met at Karen Lang’s home at 8 pm with pledges, songs, and fund contributions to a Hungarian relief effort. Members signed cards for Sandy Lang in hospital and planned a Valentine bring, pledges recited, and talks on traveling, skin care, and sewing techniques.
