Reorganization Plans for Le Mars Merrill District Progressing

Multiple committees under superintendent Archambault have studied the Le Mars and Merrill district reorganization, reporting the proposed district could enroll about 487 high school students in 1959 60 rising to around 600 in five years. They cite high per pupil valuation and cost efficiency with 500 600 students. The plan foresees a 21.5 million assessed valuation, 280 land sections, and a levy about 3 mills lower than current.

Two youths charged with iron theft in Plymouth Sioux City case

Sheriff Frank Scholer and deputies arrested two 17 year old boys in Sioux City after one voluntarily came into town from North Riverside. The alleged theft involved 13 500 pounds of scrap iron stolen from a Plymouth county salvage yard on highway 12 and sold for 135 dollars. Formal larceny charges expected in Le Mars today. The suspects were identified as Loren W. Miner and Clarence M. Verdorn with extradition possible if needed.

Marriage licenses issued in Plymouth County

Marriage licenses were issued this week at the clerk's office in Plymouth County for Herbert Owens of Humboldt and Marie Lange of Le Mars and Francis Gale and Mary Tandberg, both of Akron. Dr. Thomas F. E. Starzl, a surgeon at Passivant Hospital in Chicago, visited his home last weekend while returning from Colorado Springs where he was among young doctors interviewed for the Markle Award and was nominated by Northwestern University.

Hinton Community School District Special Election Planned

A special election on organizing the Hinton Community School District will be held February 18, 1959, in five Plymouth County polling places from 12 noon to 7 pm. Electors across districts will vote in designated locations including Liberty Consolidated School Liberty Township Hungerford and Plymouth Townships. If carried the district has about six and a half million dollars valuation, 122 sections, and roughly 600 pupils.

Reistroffer Pleads For Time In Fraud Case

Dubuque businessman Leo Peter Reistroffer, known in Le Mars, seeks more time as he runs a Mexico vending machine venture with seven Mexican employees. He argues jail would ruin their jobs while IRS probes 56 57 income taxes. He was sentenced August 4, 1956, appealed, remains free on $10,000 bond and seeks Supreme Court review.

Smith Gets Five Months In Jail For Larceny

Dennis E. Smith of Westfield was among five individuals arrested over burglaries in Woodbury and Plymouth counties. He received five months in Woodbury county jail and a $100 fine for daytime larceny. Vernon VanDerWalker got ten years at Fort Madison on the Plymouth county charge of nighttime larceny. County Blacktop Program Extends in Plymouth County

The 1959 asphaltic concrete program approved by the engineer's office plans about one mile of new blacktop on the south edge of Le Mars along 2th Street S W from Central Avenue to the angling road near highway 75. A second stretch nine miles long from Union Consolidated School east to the county line will also be resurfaced.

Anderson given jail term in DWI case in district court

OMVI Carl Roy Anderson aged 34 of Merrill was sentenced to 52 weeks in county jail for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Judge R. G. Rodman suspended 51 weeks of the term. Anderson’s driver license was suspended 60 days and bond set at 500 dollars. The case followed information filed by Patrolman Lyle Pell on January 3.
