The Hinton Community School District election is set for Wednesday February 18 with polling from 12 noon to 7 pm. Voters in Hinton town hall Hungerford No 7 Liberty district and Plymouth township will cast ballots at designated polling places including the George Savage residence and Harold Beaulieu residence. WWI Veterans Double Plymouth County Barracks Membership

Henry Heidbrink quartermaster of Plymouth county World War I veterans said membership in the barracks has nearly doubled since organization about four months ago. He cited about 300 eligible veterans and noted an upcoming meeting on Wednesday evening February 4 at the Eagles club basement with the ladies auxiliary to meet and lunch served afterward.

Local Crash on 1st Avenue and Plymouth Street

Accident Sunday at 10 25 a m involved Rich Groetken in a 1952 Ford and Gerald Sherlock in a 1950 Plymouth heading west. Front end damage to the Ford listed at 100 dollars. Plymouth damage undetermined. Mr and Mrs Robert Mauer left Sunday for Minneapolis to visit furniture marts and for Mauer Furniture store.

50 Mile Drive To Fix Tires In Iowa To Norfolk Naval Station

Robert Overman Dennis Brown and Ronald Groetken, all Le Mars youths, left Saturday for Norfolk Virginia naval station. Their return trip from Omaha stalled after two flat tires. Attempts to get help locally failed until Sonny Athens of Athens Standard Service drove 50 miles to fix the tires near Sergeant Bluffs.

Van Der Walker Sentenced in Fort Madison Burglary

Vernon Van Der Walker known as bull of the woods faced five counts of burglary in a night-time entry case in district court before Judge K C Lampon. He received a ten year term at Port Madison with possible parole reductions. His wife and mother-in-law were among the accomplices. Mrs Lucille Gilveen remains in Plymouth County. Frank Scholer transported Van Der Walker to the penitentiary on Saturday.

Colleen Kelly to wed Dean Soulliere in August

Plugged Chimney Smokes Family

On Tuesday night Albert Kurtzhal’s home filled with gas fumes from a likely plugged chimney. Mr Kurtzhal was away on business in Oklahoma. Three occupants, Mrs Kurzhal and daughters Davis and Rose Ann, were most affected. two other children, Alan and Arlene, were only lightly touched. A doctor treated them with shots.

Mrs. Lee Tatro, who has run the shop since 1954, plans to move to California with her husband next Tuesday and dispose of household furnishings this Saturday. They will visit relatives in Tucson and Phoenix and stay with the Hackett family in Anaheim until settled.

Fire Destroys Hog House Killing 125 Pigs on Le Mars Farm

A Sunday morning fire at J. C. Ruden's 642 mile east of St. Joseph’s Le Mars farm destroyed a 30 by 50 ft hoghouse housing 25 sows and 100 baby pigs. Fire departments from Le Mars Oyens and Renwen fought the blaze. two sows escaped with burned hair. The cause is unknown though electric heat lamps were off. Nearby barn and a small feed shed were damaged. Loss is estimated around 2000 dollars for the building with 1200 dollars insurance on the pigs.

Motorists Brace for Blizzard in Le Mars Area

Forehanded motorists in Le Mars prepared for the predicted blizzard by putting chains on their cars as snow drifts were forecast. Farmers faced disappointment as little snow fell and dry ground persisted. Homeowners noted January fuel bills higher due to an extended cold spell. Government station KEEM records show temperatures from January 29 to February 1 with highs of 36 and 19 and lows from 16 to two below, with scattered precipitation and a trace of precipitation.
