Two Shots Fail To Find The Heart

Bill Van Rockel of Sioux County north of Strubie is in Sacred Heart hospital in serious condition after shooting himself twice with a .410 shotgun. He was committed to Cherokee for alcoholism a month earlier and released on habeas corpus. It is unclear if this related to the attempt. Sheriff and county attorney postponed Betty Van Roekel’s assault and battery trial. her husband appeared with a witness and she was acquitted.

Granville Woman Dies After Highway Crash

Mrs. Christina M. Grady 78 of Granville died after a care bus crash on highway 75 near Sioux City. The Grady car collided with a Sioux Lines bus driven south by Lars Fred Chimtensen. Nine people were injured including Grady and eight bus passengers. Autopsy found shock internal injuries ruptured lung rib fractures and arm fracture. Funeral arrangements set for Granville. Federal Judge Martin Van Qoster rode the bus but was not injured.

Western Chivalry In Action In Iowa Court

Judge D C Lenihan disposed of the assault and battery case against Betty Van Rockel of Le Mars and Orville Harrell from the west. Harrell was found guilty December 8, fined 100 dollars and costs. Van Rockel denied participating in the attack on her husband Louie Van Rockel. The parties agreed that Louie return a radio clock and Van Rockel would return a chain saw. The incident, tied to a bar fight in Struble December 7, involved gunshot wounds to Louie’s father and horseman Harrell’s racehorse work near Sioux City.

Accidents Reported in Le Mars Snowstorm

The mayor’s office logged three accidents during and after the snowstorm in Le Mars. At 10:20 P.M. on December 2, on 4th Street and Central Avenue, Robert Stoffel in a 1948 Ford collided with Billy Zimmerman in a 936 Chevrolet causing 350 dollars damage to the Zimmerman car and left rear damage to Stoffel’s vehicle. At 2nd Avenue and 4th Street at 2 P.M. on December 2, Clyde Coppock in a 1949 Hudson collided with Will Landeath in a 1949 Diamond T pickup causing 75 dollars damage to Coppock and 35 dollars to the truck. At 7:05 A.M. on December 12, Gale Swanson in a 1952 Oldsmobile struck Merlin Blackmore’s parked 1950 Chevrolet on Central Avenue and 3rd Street, snow on the cars reducing visibility, resulting in 200 dollars damage to Swanson and 30 dollars to Blackmore.

Cold Wave Eases After Harsh Midwestern Freeze

A cold wave that dropped Sioux City to 9 below zero Thursday morning eased today with light additional snow. Official totals show three inches from Tuesday night to Wednesday morning. Ice formed under the snow caused several minor slides between Le Mars and Sioux City, but serious accidents were rare. The coldest reading was 24 degrees below zero at Le Mars Wednesday night. Mrs Pee Tatro reported their daughter-in-law Mrs YP Hackett and four year old Christine Hackett were in a Sunday car crash while en route to church. Hackett car was demolished and Mrs Hackett and Christine were shaken but not seriously hurt.

Cronin Hurt In Accident At Seney

Robert J. Cronin, 34, of Oyens, sustained a severe head gash when his car was struck from behind by a semi driven by Berniard Christen son, 43, of Sioux City, at Highway 33 near Seney. The crash sent both vehicles into a ditch. Cronin was hospitalized at Sacred Heart in Le Mars after a passing motorist ferried him from the scene. The truck, owned by City Club Distributing Co, was loaded. Christmas gifts in Cronin’s car were damaged. Weather and exact conditions not stated.
