Iowa cattle breeding study tracks feed efficiency gains
In Albia researchers compare three calf rearing systems in a purebred Hereford herd to test production testing within the herd versus external bulls and conventional selection. Early results show group yields averaging 475 pounds at 190 days for the outside bull group, 420 pounds for the closed herd, and 415 pounds for the conventional group, with years of data needed for final conclusions.
