A strong northwest wind and rain squalls struck northwest Iowa around 5:00 a.m. Monday. Le Mars measured .92 inches, Alton .86, Sheldon 1.00, Remsen .40, with near 83 hundredths, the area’s rainiest since May. Trees damaged in Le Mars and several phones out across towns. Substations near Cherokee lost about 20 miles of wire for an hour. NiPCO reported minimal issues. Power utilities reported a few transformers burned and being replaced. Plymouth Electric noted limited breaker openings and near normal service. Last week’s high was 102 degrees.

Viking Lake Named For Stanton Swedes Heritage
New pond in Montgomery County near Stanton named Viking Lake after local Swedes settlers. Conservation Commission announced the winning submission from the Stanton Viking naming contest. The 150 acre impoundment will be part of Viking Lake State Park a 900 acre area offering boating swimming fishing and picnicking. The lake should be filled by next summer.

Printer Escapes Injury In Auto When It Rolled
Loren Coleman a Le Mars printer escaped serious injury when his 1951 Studebaker rolled into a ditch three miles west of Akron in South Dakota at about 6 p m Sunday. He testified he was traveling west and forced onto the left gravel ridge then tried to return to his side but the car hit that 2 foot gravel ridge and rolled over. He suffered a severe bump on the head but said he had not been traveling fast. Deaf mute Coleman flagged down a car toward Akron and reported to police who notified state authorities. The wrecked car was towed to Kerr Motor Company in Akron.

Alton Plans Steel Crete Pool At City Ball Park Site
The Alton Democratic report says a new proposed $30,000 Steel Crete pool may be built with an eighty four foot fan shaped design and a bath house and wading area. August 28 is set for contract letting with completion target June 1 1957 and mid June 1957 as water access. The plan mirrors pools in Onawa Iowa and Gideon Nebraska and includes a firer and chlorinator sidewalks and fencing. City attorney Casey Vande Steeg attended meetings while the State Board of Health approved the location near the ball park and surrounding buildings will be torn down.

Crook Nabbed After Coincidental Car Sighting Near Sheldon
Ralph Menning and Albert Kooiker spotted a maroon Ford matching a dented bumper near Coun cil Bluffs. They traced Virgil Tracy, 40, sleeping aboard, to a raid that uncovered Menning’s stolen tools, rifles, blank checks, and forged checks totaling 158 dollars. Tracy confessed, was jailed in Orange City, and has a lengthy crime record.

Trometer Rites Set For Former Merrill Resident
L. W. Trometer 33 of Albuquerque New Mexico former Merrill resident died Thursday in Albuquerque. Body will be returned to Nelson Berger funeral home Remsen. Engbert, 46, father of two children killed in a Santa Rosa New Mexico accident, died at Santa Rosa hospital. Mrs Engbert, unconscious but improving, remains in semi coma. Confused By Lights And Drove Into Ditch In Accident
Wendell Carstensen reported driving north on Neptune road Saturday around midnight when a car with bright lights appeared. He swerved to miss it and ran into a ditch damaging the left front of his 1946 Mercury. The crash occurred about six miles south of Le Maus.
