Baby girl killed when tractor hits child near Westfield

A 14 month old daughter of Mr and Mrs Ray Hoffman Sr of Westfield died after the father’s tractor struck her as she played in the farm yard. The tragedy occurred around noon and the child was taken to Akron hospital where she died. The name Mary Lee was later released by officials. The father’s account described looking down to find his daughter beneath the tractor. The body was taken to Lewis Funeral Home in Akron.

Funeral services for Maude Whitney 77 were held Monday at St. Paul Lutheran Treton after a long illness. Burial followed in Treton cemetery. Surviving daughters Core Whitney of Seattle and Sis Ehlers of Treton, plus a stepbrother and stepsister.

The Walmer Post Drum and Bugle Corps from Le Mars was crowned 1956 Iowa State Champion at Public School Station Field after a months long practice effort by 27 members plus a 5 member Color Guard and 2 instructors. The group formed in under four years, faced early setbacks in 1954 but improved to place third at Cedar Rapids then won in Sioux City Monday evening. Plans are underway to enter the National Contest in Los Angeles with the corps poised for a third national appearance.
