The legislature adjourned with fights over sales and income taxes unresolved. Rural domination waned as urban interests won some battles while property tax relief fell short, signaling structural changes and a push for reorganization in the years ahead.
Duane Lassen freshman at Le Mars Community High School was admitted to Sacred Heart hospital after a Friday morning illness following a scuffle with a fellow student on the way from the Vocational building to the Central building. The incident led to medical attention and his parents were notified. Leo Plendl sues Ward Jansen for $215 back rent on Hinton property in district court.
Eugene L. Dorr of Phoenix Arizona received a DECA certificate for outstanding service at a Phoenix convention. He serves as state supervisor of business and distributive education in Arizona and is active as vice chairman of DECA’s board of trustees. The honor included a flag from Washington and a commendation from Senator Barry Goldwater.
Scattered clouds and strong northerly winds dominated the weekend weather with a high of 62 degrees on Sunday. Partly cloudy skies and a chance of showers are forecast tonight. Tuesday is expected to be mostly fair with cooler temperatures.
Fines over the weekend include Geary Georke of Le Mars with £9 for improper registration filed May 18. William J. Fries of Armstrong paid $14 for school bus speed, filed March 30. Arnid A. Shock of Sioux City paid $14 for night speed, filed March 30. In the sole city case Peter Kamstra of Orange City fined 329 for speeding in a restricted zone, charged by Capt. Hoeck on May 4.
A 14 aluminum Cadillac boat with a 10 hp Johnson outboard was last seen leaving Sioux City Sunday while heading toward Minnesota. The boat trailer and vessel are believed blown off course two miles north of Le Mars on Highway 75. Le Mars police and Iowa Highway Patrol are seeking public help with any information.
Iowa Public Service Co refunds are being applied to May bills for Le Mars gas customers. Residential users will see about 233 dollars credit on their IPS bills. Interruptible and contract customers will receive a full refund by check. The money comes from a settlement Northern Natural Gas Co earlier received from gas producers after Kansas price order invalidation. Refunds for firm users follow the cost of gas adjustment clause. interruptible and some commercial users use consumption since 1954.
Le Mars community plans for graduation events with LCHS baccalaureate on May 26 at Carey gym led by Rev. James D. Ransom and Gehlen High School commencement on May 29 at 8 p.m. Kurt Peters of Bismarck will address Gehlen graduates. Gehlen baccalaureate mass set for May 26 at St Joseph church and May crowning with May Queen Karen Freking and attendants.
Emmett Donald Reeves of 13319 East Fifth Street Sioux City was jailed after Sunday arrest by Highway Patrolman Richard Helmers near Westfield on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. A Goodwill truck will visit Le Mars Tuesday for clothing donations, with pickup calls to 5464944, 5466037, or 46-5457 and drop offs at the Methodist church.
Wells dairy near Le Mars donated a 1951 Chevrolet panel truck to the city fire department for use by the rescue unit. Firemen John Beasley Milton Heyl and Lee Schipper, all trained in advanced first aid, will outfit and operate the vehicle with a red dome light siren and rescue equipment from fire trucks plus new tools. The unit will respond to fire alarms and rescue calls, carrying resuscitation gear radiological monitors including a Geiger counter and air packs for smoke. Fireman John Bensley reported readiness.
Gehlen senior Lloyd Kolker of Le Mars won the 440 yard dash in 52.5 seconds to take the outdoor title, completing a sweep of indoor and outdoor state championships this year as 128 schools contested districts and finals.
A decree of divorce was granted in district court Monday to La Verne D Parrish by Judge James P Kelley. The couple had been married 25 years and the decree included a property settlement and child support for one minor child.
Over 40 people attended a Thursday May 18 tour of the West Sunnyside watershed to show the problem to the state watershed advisory board. The advisory board will decide whether to recommend watershed eligibility for Public Law 566 assistance. Westfield participants included watershed committee chair Walter Trobaugh Allan Moffatt Ron Loutsch with Worth Banks Jack Vander Schaff. La Vern Feusner of the Soil Conservation Service cited 5700 acres in the watershed and 88 percent under a cooperative agreement with Plymouth Soil Conservation district. Members present included Bryan Weberg Wayne Casey Dick Wilcox Bill Greiner Joe O Hara and Charles Ballantyne.
