The Iowa Senate advanced a plan to create a corridor of counties where the three percent sales tax would not apply to purchases by residents from adjacent states. Critics warn the rule would encourage cross border shopping and price the state out of tax revenue, while merchants and residents question enforcement and fairness.

Hungerford Washington Elgin America and Stanton H clubs elected to county 4 H office at the annual meeting May 10 at the county fair grounds. Richard Jauer of Hinton was named president with Ronald Ruden Le Mars as vice president and Donald Nuebel Le Mars as secretary treasurer. John Kurth Le Mars became historian. New officers will be installed Aug 2. Jauer will attend the state conference at Iowa State University in June with 12 other delegates. George Abwanza a Westmar College foreign student was guest speaker along with Iola Blum president of home economies 4 H. Special music by Bob Nairn Scott Morton and Terry Morton.
Carmen's Dress Shop reveals prize winners totaling over 500 dollars from a weekend opening east of Sieverding-Walsh Hardware. Winners include Mrs Arnie Wilter, Mrs Walter Klemme Akron, and many others across dresses, bags, underwear, and accessories.
Wayne Marra of Hull Iowa topped 32 bowlers Friday night to win the 143 Chevrolet. He rolled games of 220 223 and 183 for 658 pins plus 52 handicap. Vern Westphal finished second with 677 total and 37 handicap but lost by one pin. Dwayne Grotewold presented the keys as Armco Steel donated fuel and Grotewold Chevrolet completed the prize. Other high finishers included Jake Voegts Gerald McGath Norwood Geerdes and Dennis Blankenburg.
A weekend storm brought showers and light hail across Plymouth county and Northwest Iowa starting Saturday afternoon and continuing through Sunday. Rain totals varied with nearly two inches in parts west and southwest of Merrill, while Le Mars recorded 0.41 inch Saturday and Sunday morning plus about 0.53 inch Sunday afternoon and evening for a weekend total of 0.93 inch. Struble reported 1.90 inches, Maurice only 0.02 inch.
Sacred Heart marks National Hospital Week May 12 to 18 with a series of articles prepared by a hospital staffer. The program follows a patient from admittance to release to explain services, care, and operations at the local hospital. The Sisters of St. Francis run Sacred Heart since 1933 with aims to care for the ill and aged, promote health, and provide expert nursing and medical care, open 24/7 with accredited status.
An Appaloosa named Rusty owned by Elwood Bud Koopman of Le Mars died after bolting during a ride on Ith St SE near Westmar College. Student riders Leland Gustafson and Robert Brown attempted to control the horse as it struck a parked car, bleeding to death on a lawn near a quonset house. Police say riders had permission to ride at their own risk.
A Rotary safety check drives through Lincoln Street near the Elks Club Tuesday and Wednesday from 12:30 to 5:30 PM. Drivers pass five stops with checks on name, stopping distance, steering, glass, exhaust, lighting, tires, windshield wipers, horn, and rearview mirror, with a windshield sticker issued if no faults. motorists may choose their own mechanic for needed fixes.
Funeral services for Mrs. Matilda Budden 68 of Sioux City were held at 10 30 am Saturday at Cathedral of Epiphany with burial in Calvary Cemetery. Born Matilda Beaver August 8 1896 in Granville she married Zeno F Budden November 21 1916. She died after a three month illness. Survivors include two sons two daughters twelve grandchildren four sisters and three brothers.
