Des Moines hosts the new Conservative Party of Iowa formed last weekend in a bid to attract voters who see Republicans and Democrats as too liberal. Led by Dilley of Des Moines, a John Birch member, the group aims to grow beyond leaders to followers and potentially influence 1901 campaigns.

Baseball size hail struck Brunsville about 4 pm Friday, damaging homes and businesses across a half mile radius. Windows shattered, roofs dented, and paint marred while a Brunsville grain firm reported destruction of corrugated steel and aluminum. The storm moved west toward Ovens and Le Mars as residents cited near misses and injuries.
Gardeners enjoyed weekend growth after Friday rainshowers with warm Saturday and Sunday temperatures. High Sunday 66 degrees. hail size noted and moisture totals 0.24 inch, then 0.11 inch Friday and Monday respectively. Forecast calls for more thunder showers. remaining days partly cloudy and mild. A divorce suit was filed in district court by George Hoffman of Akron against Nora Hoffman, filed on grounds of desertion. couple married in Sioux City December 19, 1929 and separated in March 1931.
A crowd of over 600 attended Plymouth Maids annual Harmony Festival at Central Auditorium. Guest quartets Quarternotes of Racine and Notorieties of Minneapolis headlined with mistress of ceremonies Mrs. Alice Carlson. Chorus director Bill Timmins led Roaring Twenties themed numbers, with performances by Siouxland Sals and The Lord's Prayer finale.
Woodbury county commission of hospitalization orders Gerard Albert Weber 16 to Cherokee Mental Health Institute for observation and screening after a hearing. Weber is accused of stabbing Elizabeth Kent 29, Sioux City, 24 times and slashing her son David 1 time on April 24. He faces assault with intent to commit murder.
A local wedding license record shows John Laux and Psy obtaining licenses for marriage. The filing indicates formal approval by the relevant city clerk’s office and dates recorded in the civil registry.
Mrs Lauretta Kass Traufler of Le Mars won three top awards at Iowa Pen Women’s annual Writers Award banquet held Saturday night at Hotel Kirkwood in Des Moines. She captured first place for best television and radio script and best combination of news media. Traufler also took second place for a series of articles on a woman's page.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Homan of Remsen on May 3 at Sacred Heart hospital.
Four people were injured in a near head on collision on a highway west of Le Mars at 1 30 am Sunday. Drivers Terry King 18 and Daniel Hill 16 both from area towns are in fair condition with leg and knee injuries. King was moved to St Joseph Mercy hospital Sioux City for surgery and Hill remains semi conscious with lacerations. A passenger Jerry Klemme 18 Akron and Larry Coons 16 Storm Lake were treated and released. Highway Patrol officials report Hill car traveled west and King car east in the crash.
Two Michigan men John Rich and Richard Fleck both of Garden City were charged in Le Mars mayor's court with larceny of a motor vehicle after allegedly taking a 1954 Chevrolet owned by Merrill resident Leonard Betsworth. Police traced them to Sioux City where they were picked up about midnight Sunday. The car abandoned east of Ovens had been reported missing earlier. Sheriff Frank Scholer noted prior larceny and armed robbery convictions for Rich and Fleck respectively. The suspects admitted the theft and were sent to the county jail after transport from Sioux City Monday morning.
The Le Mars Municipal band begins its season with the first rehearsal at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Le Mars Community high school band room. Gordon Stokes, band board president, notes the opening concert in Foster park the first Wednesday in June, with the Memorial Day parade appearance listed as the initial event. Phil Hauani is the band director.
Calendar listing May events at Sacred Heart auxiliary, Municipal band rehearsal, LCHS activities including golf meet and dinner, Westmar Fine Arts festival and various concerts and lectures. Highlights include Henry V movie, poetry discussions, art exhibit, and track events across May 6 to May 12.
