Curious mail, missing funds case, and local events

A Le Mars businessman traced missing mail order checks that had been paid with records he could not find. State Representative Gordon Stokes reported mail from Plymouth County residents, some returned as undeliverable. March weather mixes winter and spring and a Lenten study drew 250 attendees at St. John American Lutheran Church led by Dr. G. C. Thompson. Dr. Richard Palmer of Morningside College will speak next. Westmar Graduate Among Avalanche Survivors Near Ouray

A Colorado patrolman climbs rope during an intensive search for three people buried beneath forty feet of snow after an avalanche swept a car from Red Mountain Pass near Ouray. Missing are Rev Marvin Hudson a 1999 Westmar College graduate and his daughters Amelia and Pauline. A California scientist is flown in to assist with a magnetometer and electronic metal detector. The search was halted briefly as state crews used a howitzer to shoot shells into the snow above the road. the potential slide endangers continued operations.

March weather offered a mix of overcast skies with snow flurries and sunbreaks as a morning low reached 17 and Tuesday topped 31. Plymouth County farms signed up 642 for the 1963 feed grain program with 1,260 enrolled in 1962. At the ASCS office in Le Mars, manager Wm J Ahlers urged timely signup before the March 22 deadline to avoid a last minute rush. About a dozen farmers daily sought information.

Judgment Sought for 3959 Against Gronemeyer in District Court

Melos Manufacturing Co. files suit in district court against Glenn Dale Gronemeyer seeking judgment for 3959 plus 7930 attorney fees and interest at 5 percent. The claim arises from a contract to purchase a 1959 Chevrolet truck signed April 30, 1902.

Northwest Iowa Solo Contest At Westmar Campus

More than 1 050 students from 37 school systems and 45 communities will compete Saturday at Westmar College in Estherville area Westmar Buena Vista jointly sponsor the fourth annual northwest Iowa junior high and grade school instrumental solo contest. Twelve centers operate with judges from outside the area. Contestants perform on any standard band or orchestral instrument and are rated I plus I II and III. Spectators welcome with a noon lunch for band directors and a 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. schedule full of performances.

Council Considers End of Free Rural Fire Truck Service

Le Mars council weighs ending the long standing free rural fire response for farms after a survey of Northwest Iowa practices. A proposed plan would set fees for rural calls, require farmers to supply water after the first load, and rotate firemen, while city crews continue to respond to calls.

Liquor by the Drink Ballot Sent to Des Moines Officials

Citizens are asked to mark an X on a ballot indicating support for liquor by the drink for Towa. The completed ballot will be sent to the Daily Sentinel and Floyd Valley News.
