Le Mars land deals rumors touch highways and chains

Reports swirl about a possible large grocery store on highway 735 occupying several residences and a deluxe motel chain eyeing Le Mars. Promoters hint at further highway developments as plans unfold, with no official confirmation yet.

Car veers off rain slick highway injuring pole and fence

Harold Michaelson of Le Mars drove west on highway 5 during a rainstorm when his car left the pavement, breaking a telephone pole and part of a fence 400 feet west of the Gearke farm near Branch corner. No damage estimate listed for the 1962 Ford. Police Chief Fay Terpenning investigated. Separately, Iowa State university held its annual Agricultural Credit schools ending Friday with 29 bank officials from Iowa and nearby states receiving completion certificates, including Robert J. Hartman of First National Bank Akron.

Life's End Funeral Services for Louis Winterfeld

Funeral services are set for 2 pm Thursday at Mauer's funeral home for Louis John Winterfeld 91 lifelong Craig resident who died Sunday in Elkhorn Nebraska. Rev Ervin Schemmel of Craig will officiate burial is in St John Lutheran cemetery Reading township near Ireton. He farmed around Craig for 50 years and is survived by four daughters 12 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

City out of liquor application forms in Le Mars

First batch of class C commercial liquor permit forms in Le Mars ran out today and more were ordered. City Clerk Nels Newendorp said forms must be duplicated and only nine requests were filled before a Des Moines call for replacements. Applications will be available again by Wednesday with excess class A and class B forms on hand. The first request came from Club Debonair. Mary Ellen Kessenich has joined the University of Omaha stenographic bureau after leaving Plymouth Co-Op Oil.

A crowd of several hundred gathered in Le Mars as Miss Iowa Ramona Meyler received a royal welcome home after arriving by motorcade from the weigh station on Highway 75. Le Mars youths face charges after tavern brawl

Two Le Mars men Robert Plueger and Lanny Farmer were charged with disturbing the peace after a Monday brawl at the highway Tap on Plymouth Street. Each posted 29 dollar bond, and Mayor E R Scholer continued the case for two weeks. The fight began inside the tavern, glassware broke, and the dispute continued outside with arrests.
