The West Mar College housing project bid process concluded Friday with no contracts awarded. Bids opened Thursday from four general contractors and seven other bidders attended the session.

Flag Day observance delays amid morning shower

Flags were raised later than usual in the business district on Friday after an early shower. Temperatures rose into the 80s by noon with 0.05 inch of rain noted locally and more elsewhere. Forecasts call for variable clouds with showers and thunderstorms tonight and Saturday, then cooler air and more showers into mid next week.

Westmar College expands administration with new director

Westmar College announces Rev. C. R. Ziettlow will become director of college relations effective July 1. He previously led alumni and church relations, and has served as pastor in several EUB churches. Other hires include Robert Bitterly as director of alumni relations and Walter Williams as college comptroller, part of a broad expansion as the college reports a student body over 700 and a growing budget.

Le Mars Women Host State Business Club Meet

The state convention of Business and Professional Women's clubs gathered at the New Inn in Lake Okoboji for a three day session ending with a brunch. Gasoline Transport Slams into Blaue's D X Station

An early Friday crash at Blaue's D X service station on a highway 75 curve in Le Mars damaged the south frontage glass and a tire rack. Wilbert Kleene, 48, of Hull drove a full load northbound gasoline transport. police charged him with failure to have control. The station has a history of similar collisions and one fatality has occurred at the site. Ed ward Scholten was listed as the owner of the rig. The cab damage to the left side was not estimated. Patrolman Clarence Langi investigated the incident.

Lyle Day Named Commander Of Walmer Post American Legion

Lyle Day was elected commander of Walmer post American Legion at the post meeting held Wednesday night. He had served as adjutant. Outgoing commander was Kenneth Lubben. Installation of new officers will occur at the July meeting. The post reports membership above quota by two. June events include a circus on June 20 and a carnival by the drum and bugle corps on June 28 and 29.

Prof Rafat to study at Hague law academy

Amir Rafat assistant professor of political science at Westmar college is invited to attend the Hague Academy of International Law at the Peace Palace in The Hague Netherlands. He will start July 29 and study through early September using the academy’s vast library to research international relations for his PhD dissertation. Rafat, Swiss native, holds BA MA from Geneva and an MA from Nebraska, and is visiting his parents in Switzerland during June and July.

Soil and Water Conservation Week Declared by Iowa

Governor Harold E. Hughes proclaims June 16 to 23, 1963 as Soil and Water Conservation Week urging citizens and organizations to participate. The proclamation highlights statewide efforts in soil and water conservation, flood prevention, and watershed programs coordinated by one hundred soil conservation districts to protect agricultural income and the state's economy. Teracing and crop rotation cited as cost effective measures to retain organic matter and reduce soil loss after heavy rainfall.

New Divorce Case Filed Two Decrees Granted

Judge James P Kelley Friday granted two decrees of divorce on cruel and inhuman treatment. Ruby Denny was granted a divorce from Cecil L Denny with alimony and child support for their minor son. Patricia Ann Bremer was granted a divorce from Hermann Bremer with child support. A new case filed Friday has Constance Bates seeking a divorce from Robert H Baker, married December 14 1943 in Elk Point South Dakota and parents of eight children. They seek custody of the children, child support, attorney fees and household goods.

Miss Iowa pageant draws contestants from LeMars and Remsen

Eighteen or more Iowa beauty contestants compete for the Miss Iowa title at Arnolds Park on June 22 and 23. Remsen plans a local Miss Remsen contestant Janice Ruth Niggeling, 20, sister of a Le Mars entrant, while Miss Le Mars Dr. Ramona Meyler headlines the Le Mars area. The event features parades, a swimsuit tour, judging open to the public, and a crown by last year’s Cedar Rapids winner Regina Prusha before the winner advances to national contests in Miami Beach. Preparations also underway for the VFW state convention in Arnolds Park that weekend.
