Le Mars voters weigh council term recall

Le Mars residents face a special election to decide whether to continue the staggered four year terms or move to a biannual fall municipal election cycle. The change, adopted years ago to keep experienced members on hand for long term projects, prompted debate on whether to retain the plan.

Twenty two members of Le Mars high school class of 1913 gathered for a 50th reunion on June 1 and 2. Of 47 graduates, 15 were absent and ten are deceased. First event of its kind for a Le Mars HS class, with Sunday dinner at the Country Club.

Thunder Showers Dumps 1.31 Inches. Temps Stay Muggy

Thunder showers early today and Tuesday afternoon dropped 1.31 inches total in the region with 0.88 inches from Tuesday's downpours. A morning shower added 0.8 inches at the mayor's gauge, temps in the upper 80s expected to continue humid with more storms likely tonight and Thursday. Local totals included 1.40 at Remsen, 1.10 at Lake Okoboji, and smaller amounts at James, Sioux Center, and Seney. Two small water spouts touched Lake Okoboji Tuesday afternoon. low dawn temperature 59 degrees. June moisure deficit being made up amid forecasts of warm, humid weather. Thompson to receive state 4-H alumni award

Dr G O Thompson Wertmar College academic dean will join three other Iowa 4-H alumni at a June 14 ceremony at Iowa State University Ames to receive the state 4-H alumni recognition for long time service, leadership and community work including Story county in the 1920s and roles as educator pastor and college administrator. A truck owned by Harkers Wholesale Meats of LeMars was damaged in an accident Tuesday between Sloan and Onawa with driver Wendell Wiersma uninjured. Jaycees will meet Thursday night at 8 at the Eagles club in LeMars.

Lions Club Luncheon Schedule Change at Elks Club

Le Mars Lions announce Thursday noon luncheons will continue in the Elks club basement dining room. A scheduling conflict means no luncheon meetings at the Country club during the summer period.

New Clerk Raised on Struble Farm

Arlan Beeck named clerk of the Plymouth county district court by the board of supervisors. He is the son of Henry and Mrs Beeck, from a Struble area farm. He will be 22 in August, a Le Mars High School 1958 graduate, attended Westmar college a year, worked at Wilson Co Cedar Rounds as production accountant, then served as credit manager at Sherwin Williams in Le Mars for 18 months. He is married to Betty Dekater of Maurice. they have two daughters, Shelley age two and Kathy age one. Their home is 421 Lombardi road.

Wedding License Issued To Norman Walker And Mary Lou Schafer

A wedding license was issued Wednesday to Norman Walker, 30, of Andrew Town, and Mary Lou Schafer, 2, of Le Mars. Special election July 10 on city terms in Le Mars

A special municipal election will be held Wednesday July 10 in Le Mars to decide whether to lengthen city officers terms from two to four years. If approved, top two council seats and mayor and treasurer will be four year terms, with others elected in 1965. Polling places: Ward 1 court house, Ward 2 city hall, Ward 3 high school auditorium. Ben Von Hagel of Le Mars Dairy Queen promotes a 19 cent malt and shake sale June 6.

Heiden Golden Wedding Anniversary Planned in Merrill

Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Heiden of Merrill will celebrate their golden wedding with an open house Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Merrill Legion club. They wed June 11, 1913 near Merrill and have lived in the community ever since. They are parents of six children: Evelyn Bock and Gladys Dreeszen of Le Mars, Verda Delperdang of Merrill, Dwight of Sioux City, Mainard of Durango Colorado, and Harold of Sergeant Bluff, with two daughters deceased.
