Becky Langel to Enter Miss Iowa Ideal Miss Contest

Plymouth county fair queen Becky Langel 17 will represent Le Mars Chamber of Commerce Plymouth county fair board in the Miss Iowa Ideal Miss pageant December 27 to 30 at Ames. She is Gehlen senior, Future Who's Who honoree, and will compete in dress, sportswear, interview and talent with no preliminaries.

Dull Named Plymouth County Attorney in 2 Year Term

Le Mars attorney J Michael Dull, nephew of the late Paul Dull, was appointed Plymouth County attorney by the county board of supervisors after both he and rival Tom Hoffman applied for the vacancy. The term runs Jan 2 for two years and two months. Dull, married to Kay Khnganman Dull, resides at 527 Lee Drive, and is a Notre Dame and University of Iowa graduate who served in the U S Army JAG Corps. He plans to run the office with initial help if needed.

Thaw Continues Amid Gas Switch and Mild Outlook

Cloudy Tuesday morning left sidewalks slick from thaw slush as temperatures rose from a low of 20 after a high of 32 on Monday. Iowa fuel shortages from a sub-zero spell triggered a switch back to natural gas for heavy users and corn drying resumed. An overcast break is expected this afternoon with partly cloudy skies and upper 30s on Wednesday, and moisture is forecast at 220 percent chance.

Roger Hawkins of Le Mars serves aboard USS Ticonderoga CVS-14 among the crew assigned to assist and observe Apollo 17 splashdown in the South Pacific. The mission, flown by geologist-astronauts Harrison Schmitt Eugene Cernan and Ronald Evans, began December 7 and ends with a planned San Diego homeward arrival late December.

In Le Mars one retailer after another reports shortages of both natural and artificial Christmas trees this year. Bartel Floral notes weather harms crops and foresees possible natural-tree shortages as demand for both tree types grows with households buying two trees per home. Randall's Discount Foods Hy-Vee and Fareway all report sold-out inventories and higher orders for artificial and natural trees amid brisk demand.

Five town libraries seek funds for rural patrons

Five Plymouth County town library boards asked for 27,750 dollars to support rural residents, proposing a rural per capita levy or half mill, to be shared equally among Le Mars Akron Kingsley Merrill and Remsen libraries. They cited free services for rural families, rising book costs, and a pilot three year funding plan with future tax considerations.
