Westmar College to present Civilisation BBC film series

Westmar College will show the Civilisation series in Kime Hall on seven Monday and Wednesday evenings starting January 3 at 7 p.m. Ken Clark guides a personal view of Western civilization through art, music, literature, and politics from Rome’s fall to the 20th century.

Morrissey elected Chamber vice president for 1973

Jim Morrissey was elected to serve as the Chamber of Commerce vice president for 1973 and will automatically become president in 1974. The decision came at a regular board meeting Wednesday morning. Secretary Glee King said ballots for the new directors were mailed to members and are due back by December 18.

Snowmobiles Flouted Rules Roil Le Mars Streets

Police report multiple complaints about snowmobile operations in Le Mars on Tuesday night. Offenders were accused of driving on lawns and near Floyd Valley hospital in violation of city ordinances. Police pursued several machines, but mobility hindered apprehension. Mayor Scholer and Snowmobile Club President William Wruck urged enforcement and adherence to designated areas and school-property restrictions.

Snowplows and Snowmobile Rules Stir Le Mars Officials

Snow plows and shovelers worked Tuesday night amid 5.2 inches of snow with a moonlit crisp night and subzero morning. Winds turned toward warmer 20s by Wednesday as Iowa saw up to 10 inches in spots while Le Mars announced snowmobile limits and strict rules for city streets, hours, speed, crossings, registration, and penalties.

Westmar to Install Full IBM 1130 Computer System

Westmar college advances a campus computer project with an IBM 1130 to support test scoring analysis course offerings and simulations in biology economics and other programs. The system will replace the joint Sioux City center and end the Morniing side college partnership by March 1 1973.

Iowa fairs report profits slim as crackdown hurts income

In Iowa 81 of 103 county and district fair boards posted profits this year while 22 did not, with 66 avoiding losses by using fair grounds for off season income. Total operating income reached 2.57 million against expenses of 2.91 million, a net loss of 342,767. Gate receipts fell due to gambling crackdowns. concessions dropped to 359,041 and attendance rose to 2,330,913. Junior divisions showed growth despite livestock declines. State aid accounted for 4 percent of income and county aid for 21 percent. The Iowa state fair, despite 172,918 in revenue, finished 131,799 in the red after maintenance and capital improvements. Kenneth Fulk cited hot weather as a key factor.

Plymouth and Sioux County fairs turn a profit in 1972

Plymouth county fair drew an estimated 25 000 attendees over four days with total operating income of 37 653 and expenses of 19 352 plus 9 082 in permanent improvements. Non fair income reached 23 417 and net gain from operations stood at 4 293. Sioux Center fair recorded 21 600 attendees with total income 26 079 and expenses 11 465 yielding a 14 614 net gain.
