Energy shortages hit Iowa as midwest gas stations face closures

Propane and fuel oil shortages tighten across Iowa with industries in Sioux City Waterloo and elsewhere planning temporary shutdowns. Interrup tible gas plans persist though rising prices and scarce alternative fuels threaten residential heat and business operations.

Model of Floyd Valley hospital plan by Duffy and Associates

A model shows a proposed Floyd Valley hospital to be built northeast of the current facility. Sioux City architects Duffy and Associates conceived the design. Gov Ray seeks fed plan for fuel emergency

Governor Robert D. Ray asks the Office of Emergency Planning in Washington to assess heating oil availability and the risk of a Midwest shortage. He cites Iowa's 31 million gallon annual use and wants to know federal actions if a shortage occurs.

Retired Le Mars coach’s wife dies at 72

Mrs. Josephine Carey 72, wife of longtime Le Mars coach E F Carey, died Thursday morning December 7 1972 at her home after an apparent heart attack. She was born July 4 1900 in Ivanhoe Minnesota and taught home economics in Minnesota Colorado and Nevada before moving to Le Mars in 1933. Funeral Monday December 11 at St James Catholic church with burial in Wilno Minnesota. Survivors include her husband, a sister in Ivanhoe and a brother in Ruthton.

Maude Buckley, Le Mars abstract firm owner, dies at 69

Maude M. Buckley 69, owner of Le Mars Abstract and Title Co., died unexpectedly Wednesday at her home in Le Mars. Born April 11, 1903 in Yakima Washington, she moved to Le Mars and took over the firm in 1938. Survived by daughter Rosalre Piroite of Leawood Kansas, brother Ed Fitzpatrick of St. Joseph Missouri, six grandchildren. Funeral Saturday at 10 a.m. at St James Catholic church with burial in Calvary cemetery. Parish and CDA rosaries to be recited Friday evening at the funeral home. Preceded in death by husband Michael B. Buckley, parents, and a brother Joseph.

Siouxland Blood Bank Serves Floyd Valley Area Aid

Siouxland Community Bloodbank, based in Sioux City and now in its sixth year, supplies blood to four Sioux City hospitals plus Floyd Valley in Le Mars and others in Akron Orange City and Rock Rapids. It processes about 6,200 units yearly from 6,000 to 7,000 donors. Donors receive free blood for their families nationwide.

Sioux City Woman Killed in Plymouth County Crash

A Sioux City woman, Mrs Vern Kay Ann Peterson, 33, died in a two car crash east of Hinton. Norman Thoreson, 18, seriously injured, and Ronald Bates, 36, in fair condition. Bates was driving the other vehicle. Peterson was a passenger in his car. The wreck occurred on K-42 and C-60 with Thoreson and Bates hospitalized in Sioux City and Le Mars respectively. Funeral plans for Peterson are pending.
