Merrill man forced from home by plugged chimney
Carl Johnson of Merrill aged 93 was smoke damaged when soot built up in a heater chimney caused a small fire. Fire Chief Bill Trometer and Merrill firefighters cleared the smoke and unplugged the chimney. Johnson was assisted from the house by his daughters and spent the night with one daughter.

Four injured in two car crash at Million Dollar corner
Four people were hurt in an early morning collision 14 miles north of Le Mars at the Million Dollar corner where highways 75 and 3 meet. John Kraft of Rock Valley drove a 1972 Oldsmobile south on 75 while Darrel Kraayenbrink of Treton headed east on 10 and then onto 75. Anna Kragt, a Kragt passenger, was treated and released after stomach pains. Darrel Kraayenbrink Eugene Byker Hawarden and Larry Kraavenbrink Ireton were taken to Orange City hospital with concussions. Byker and Larry Kraavenbrink released after exam.
