New mercury vapor lights brighten downtown Le Mars

Downtown Le Mars gains a brighter look with five 1000-watt electrolier lights by Iowa Public Service. A total of twelve lights are installed, with more planned. Les Juan, district commercial manager, notes two additional 1000-watt directional sentry lights for Jim Hays motors outdoor display, all rental fixtures, during ongoing street repairs.

Two Remsen teens die in fiery Sunday crash on Hwy 3

Roxanne M Moritz 17 and Mark Staab 18 died in a one car accident early Sunday west of Remsen on Highway 3. The vehicle struck a tree and caught fire after leaving the road. Police, Remsen fire and rescue aided at the scene. Funeral services set for Tuesday at St Marys church Remsen.

Weekend Cold Snap Drops Le Mars Temps Below Zero

A cold front moved into Le Mars, Sunday night saw temperatures fall below zero for the first time this year. Monday’s high was forecast at 10 to 15 degrees above zero with overnight lows of 0 to 10 degrees. Skies were overcast with potential snow tonight and early tomorrow. Sunday’s high reached 13 and the low was 1 below zero.

Large crowds at the free Christmas matinees prompt new showtimes. On Saturday Dec 9 Black Beauty (G) offers matinees at 10 am 1 pm and 3 pm. On Saturday Dec 15 The Daydreamer (G) plays at 1 pm 1 30 pm 3 pm and 3 30 pm.

Large interest in new junior pool swim lessons

Public notice shows 132 responses plus five more by phone for swim lessons starting Tuesday at the new indoor pool. Classes will be small with 10 to 15 per group, times set for non swimmers, beginners, intermediates, and adults. Instructors include Bob McKinley Dale Seiver and Barb Scholer. Fees run 10 dollars for adults and 8 dollars for children and students for weekly lesson series. Public swim times listed as Monday Wednesday Friday 7 to 10 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m.

Snowmobiles Stolen From Plymouth County Fairgrounds

Pew's Inc. of Le Mars reported two snowmobiles missing from the Plymouth county fairgrounds. A new blue Sno Jet and a white used Polaris were stored on a double trailer between Becker hall and exhibition hall for about two weeks before discovery last week Wednesday. Lt. Jerry Kelly leads the investigation under Police Chief Jim Hoeck.

Missouri accident claims lives of Mrs Brandt Freeburg kin

Rev and Mrs Brandt Freeburg of Le Mars attended double funeral services in Lawry City Mo for Mrs Freeburgs sister Mrs lah Scott 41 and daughter Marilyn Scott 19 who were killed in a Nov 24 two car crash on a Missouri highway near Sedalia. Three others died at the scene. Marilyn a Cincinnati college music major was home for Thanksgiving.

County to hold hearing on Kingsley area road work

County engineer Herb Floyd posted a notice for a public hearing on grading drainage temporary surfacing and paving for county route L-14 near Kingsley Garfield township. The hearing is Monday Dec 11 at 1 30 p m in the Le Mars courthouse board of supervisors room with discussion of right of way and construction timelines and opportunity for oral written and exhibit input through Dec 21.

Monday farm accident claims Ireton farmer life

Clarence Muth, 57, longtime Ireton area farmer, was killed about 8:30 a.m. Monday when dragged into an automatic feeder on a wagon while feeding cattle. Neighbors and the Ireton rescue squad found him. body taken to Dow funeral home with services pending. Dr Eneboe attributed death to head injuries.

Accident suit seeks damages in district court

Esther Plathe as administrator of Dianne Plathe estates sues Dennis Wiliam Anderson and James H. Kayser for 185000 dollars claiming negligent driving caused the 1971 Dec 5 crash near Remsen that killed 19 year old Dianne Plathe. Damages claimed include burial expenses loss of future earnings damages for death and loss of companionship and for pain and suffering. Survivors include Velda Benson Kathleen and Ronald Muth with other relatives noted.

Drug council to elect officers at Remsen library

The district four council of the Iowa state drug abuse authority will elect officers at 3:30 p.m. on December 12 in the Remsen library. The meeting will cover a year in review, future funding discussions, and an outreach project report. District four includes Cherokee, Ida, Lyon, Monona, Plymouth, Sioux and Woodbury counties.

Former Akron man dies in Kansas car crash

Funeral services for Pvt. Donald Joseph Mace 18 formerly of Akron will be held at 1 30 p m Tuesday at Schroeder funeral home Akron with Rev James Sandvik officiating. Burial in Riverside cemetery will follow under Schroeder direction a military honor guard from Fort Leavenworth will conduct graveside services He was born October 20 1954 in Vermillion South Dakota son of Ervin W Mace and the late Mrs Mace He attended Akron schools then Sioux City and joined the Army last January He took basic training at Fort Ord California He was killed Thursday November 30 in a one car accident near Junction City Kansas Survivors include his father and three brothers Gerald G Alan W and Edward L Mace and a sister Mary Mace all of Sioux City
