They discussed a summer lawn contest with awards around September first and formed a committee led by Mrs. Gertie Rylander to plan details for the June meeting. Champion elm in Buchanan county Iowa wins state honor
The Buchanan county elm on Jonas A. Milford Mulford estate farm southeast of Independence wins the state champion elm title awarded by the Federated Garden Clubs and State Horticulture Society at Ames. The tree is estimated several hundred years old, 15 ft 2 in in circumference, 70 ft high, with a 90 ft branch spread.
