Rawhide Railroad: Early Washington Line Built From Scraps
The Rawhide railroad, built by Dr D S Baker between Walla Walla and Wallula, ran 32 miles to move wheat toward the Columbia. Rails were wooden with strap iron, a novelty mocked as rawhide straps that distance failed when eaten by hungry wives. A seven and a half ton engine hauled flat cars and a hearse like coach carried passengers. A collie guarded the covncatcher, delays frequent as straps loosened. Despite flaws, the line was profitable and sold to Oregon Steam Navigation. Built in 1863 during Washington’s wilderness era.
