Vatican honors America's first male saint Neumann
Pope Paul VI urged U S bishops to imitate Saint John Nepomucene Neumann in teaching especially on sexual morality. The canonization drew 25 000 Americans to St Peter's Square as three days of services began in Rome with Cardinals Carberry Krol and Cooke leading masses. Neumann born in Bohemia in 1811 came to the United States at 25, became Philadelphia bishop at 41 and died at 49 after expanding parochial schools. Two Pennsylvania men and an Italian woman credited with miraculous intercession attended the ceremony.
