Forest Fires Near Los Alamos Mixed but Firefighters Close to Control

Gusty winds and low humidity hindered New Mexico Arizona and Colorado crews fighting large forest fires. About 10 000 acres burned with 8 million dollars in damage near Los Alamos threatening the laboratory before stabilizing. An estimated 1 000 firefighters from as far as Oregon battled the blazes as another fire near Flagstaff and Sierra Vista prompted evacuations.

Handicapped Guidelines Drive Changes In Lawton Schools

Lawton Public Schools have expanded special education programs over five years under HEW guidelines and a pending law. Sixty plus programs, facilities at Rogers Elementary, and state grants with local matching funds support deaf, learning disabled, and emotionally challenged students. Plans include home based services and added staff to meet by 1980 three to 21 year olds and 1978 three to 17 year olds.

Four Die In Oklahoma One-Vehicle Crashes Weekend

Accidents Involving Children and Trike Rider Reported

A pickup crash in Kiowa County injures a 10 year old girl Kimberly and 13 year old Paula A Dyer while another child, five, was crushed when the vehicle overturned. All three girls were treated and released. Gerald R Wilson 22 was hurt in a separate three wheel motorcycle crash near Lone Wolf. He was hospitalized at Altus Air Force Base Hospital for possible internal injuries. He was not wearing a helmet. The truck driver was Timothy Smith 19 of Virginia Beach.
