Lawton Population Tops 54 650 In Realtor Survey

Lawton's population is estimated at 54 650, reaching a new high, with 15 101 family units occupied and 505 vacancies, yielding a 3.09 percent vacancy rate. The occupancy rate stands at 96.91 percent, up from 95.7 in November 1953, and supports a growth of more than 2 500 since November 1955 and 4 000 since 1954 per George Page of Southwestern Bell Telephone Co.

Senator Kilgore Dies After Stroke at 63

Sen Harley Kilgore of West Virginia dies at Bethesda Naval Hospital at 2 23 AM following a stroke after a period of illness from high blood pressure. He had just begun recovery and was expected to leave soon. Kilgore, 63, had served three Senate terms and chaired the Judiciary Committee, switching to a crisis point for Democratic Senate control.

Walker named head coach at Mississippi State College

Mississippi State College announces Wade Walker as head football coach succeeding Darrell Royal who resigns to take Washington post. Both men are former Oklahoma stars. Walker, previously Royal’s assistant, will have his four year contract recommended to the board at its March meeting, per President Ben Hilbun.

Shorter Banking Hours Scheduled in Lawton

Lawton banks will adopt new hours from 10 am to 2 pm Monday through Friday and 10 am to noon Saturdays starting March 12, due to federal wage and hour rule changes effective March 1. Fort Sill National Bank unaffected. Affected banks include Security Bank and Trust Co, American National Bank, and City National Bank.

Wrecks at Swampscott and Revere Kill Many in Snow

In two related rear end collisions near Swampscott Junction and in Revere Massachusetts at least 13 people died and more than 60 were injured as four Boston and Maine trains collided in heavy snow. Survivors from the first crash joined a second wreck about five miles away, with 12 injured there. Bodies were moved to a fire station for identification as priests administered rites.

A Lawton mother warns of a dog poisoning spree in a four block area on I Ave. more than a dozen dogs have died from strychnine. Pioneer Pastor Thomison dies at 86 in Medicine Park

Rev. Howard Thomison 86 longtime Methodist pastor and former Lawton district supervisor died at his Medicine Park home after years of declining health. Services set for 10 a.m. Thursday at First Methodist with Rev. J. J. Stowe Jr. officiating. Burial in Braman beside wife and three children who preceded him. He served 50 years in ministry including posts at Braman Cushing Cleveland Blackwell Fairview Claremore Woodward Perry Guthrie and others before retiring in 1939.

Ditch Digger Hits Pipeline Causing Fires

In West Los Angeles three workers were severely burned when a trench-digging machine struck a pipeline and gasoline leaked into sewers. Fires burned for hours, nine structures damaged, four schools closed, and six houses plus three businesses hit. Emergency declared in a 10 square mile area for over seven hours.

Four Duck Freight Killed By Express

In Lisbon Portugal four workmen on a railroad track were killed when they jumped from the track to avoid an approaching freight train. The noise of the freight drowned out a second express train coming from the opposite direction. All four men perished.

Manslaughter Charge Filed in Lawton Crash

A first degree manslaughter charge was filed this morning against Celsus Cirus Houser 52 of Lawton the driver of a car that overturned Saturday fatally injuring Agnes Atteberry 42 of 1807 S 10th The charge says he drove in a careless and wanton manner The accident occurred at the intersection of N Railroad and U S 277 At the scene Houser said he and Atteberry were en route to Medicine Park to fish when his 1949 Ford failed to make a curve and plunged down a steep embankment Atteberry suffered critical injuries and died later after transfers between hospitals The report noted a partly filled whisky bottle at the scene Houser denied drinking any of it Three more people were injured later Monday in separate incidents including Cora Blankenship 55 injured in a car pedestrian collision and Lee McGill 27 driving a 1950 Chrysler in the second crash
