President Eisenhower's doctor said he urges the chief executive to slow down during recovery from a heart attack. The bulletin cited fatigue after long conferences and noted conditions are improving, but questioned a mid February decision on running again.
Oklahoma's grim 1955 traffic toll rose to 551 after a bloodier weekend with 11 deaths in 36 hours. A head on wreck 414 miles south of Altus on U S 283 killed 12 and injured three. Notables from Duncan and Tulsa were among the dead. In Jackson County two more fatalities occurred in a fiery crash as a northbound Hudson struck a truck and semi.
Secretary of Defense Wilson announced a substantial expansion of the long and medium range rocket program amid reports of rapid Soviet progress. The effort will be directed by Deputy Defense Secretary Reuben Robertson with Army Navy and Air Force leaders in charge within their services. The aim is to field a family of ballistic missiles as a deterrent without cutting conventional weapons, though no dollar figures were given.
In Omaha Nebraska police investigate the slaying of Carolyn Marie Nevins a 20 year old senior honor student found behind campus bushes with evidence of a struggle and disarranged garments. Police label the killer sadistic and say sex motive is apparent and autopsy is planned.
Fort Sill Public Information office announced that a Corporal surface-to-surface guided missile battalion the 246th FA Missile Bn and the 515th Ordnance company will move from Fort Bliss Texas and Redstone Arsenal Alabama to Fort Sill early in 1956. The units total 18 officers 10 warrant officers and 317 enlisted men.
Partly cloudy and milder today with high temperatures between 43 and 47. Saturday expects a 49 degree high and a low around 31.
Lawton high school senior Don Kouri was elected governor of the fifth annual Hi-Y State Youth Legislature to be held January 28 at the Oklahoma City capitol. He is Lawton's second youth to hold the post, defeating Ardmore’s Gene Cunningham. Kouri, son of Mr and Mrs Eddie Kouri of 2119 Arlington, has chaired committees and served as Hi-Y chaplain. Dale Thompson is state Hi-Y president. Kouri’s campaign, run with Carl Cooper, lasted about a month.
In East Berlin two American privates, Richard L. Calbert and Willie Js Holden, were handed to the U S Army by Soviet authorities after a street brawl. East German Communists had threatened legal action, but the Army secured their return to the American sector for medical exams and administrative custody while the case is reviewed.
The one room country school in Comanche County Oklahoma dwindles from 96 to 10 as rural populations fall and children move to town schools. Clarence Scott notes lasting quality of remaining schools while praising a new Flower Mound facility as an example of continued local effort.
Forecasters expect milder conditions in Southwest Oklahoma with Lawton in a favorable position while most of the state faces colder weather and light snow flurries. A light snow had reached Hugo by nightfall Saturday, with up to two inches possible early Sunday. highs near 47 degrees Sunday after 49 Saturday.
Brig. Gen. John F. Bird arrives at Fort Sill and will be welcomed with a formal ceremony in front of McNair Hall at 8 30 a.m. Monday. The event will honor his arrival and succession of Brig. Gen. John B. Horton who retires at month end. The 17th Field Artillery Group organizes. 522nd Infantry with Lt. Col. R. W. Carpenter leads a 60 man honor guard. 548th Field Artillery Battalion provides four 155mm howitzers. 598th Field Artillery Battalion furnishes two more 155mm guns to form an arch. The 77th Army Band will play. Bird previously led the 1st Division Artillery since March 1954.
Oklahoma City state Pardon and Parole Board begins a new review Monday of the Fairris case in which Hurbie Franklin Fairris Jr. faces execution for the July 16, 1954, murder of detective Bennie Cravatt. Accomplices Price and Skinner pleaded guilty and serve life terms after a last minute confession shift. Governor Gary ordered a 50 day stay to allow the board to reconsider mercy. The 15th annual Schubert Music club Christmas program features an 85-voice choir under William Fletcher, Lawton piano instructor and composer. The Messiah is presented today at 3 p.m. with Kathleen Haley and Mrs. H. C. Brammer assisting. Local residents are invited to attend.
Senator George of Georgia predicts the Democratic House will move quickly to cut individual income taxes when Congress reconvenes. He notes a strong tax-cut sentiment among returning lawmakers, though Senate action may take time.
United Nations, N.Y. Dec. 10 Russia forced an all or nothing ultimatum on the U.N. Security Council over the proposed admission of 18 member states. Moscow warned it would veto the entire plan if voting did not follow its dictated procedure, prompting astonished delegates to adjourn after a five hour clash. Arkady Sobolev threatened to veto the 18 in one ballot while Iran and Britain urged trust.
Frederick B. Lee resigned as civil aeronautics administrator after being asked to quit by Secretary Sinclair Weeks for a lack of satisfactory working relations. President Eisenhower accepted the resignation and named Charles J. Lowen Jr. to succeed him. Lowen had been deputy administrator.
