Peg-Leg Billy and the Ranch That Became a Boom Town

A New Mexico cor ing story recounts Peg-Leg Billy from Montana who finds his ranch transformed into a thriving city overnight. Banks, hotels, papers, theater, and saloons occupy the former homestead as settlers rush in, leaving Billy to pay a hefty pound for trespass and lose over a thousand drinks in one swoop.

Hydrophobia remedy bill in New York history sparks controversy

The 1806 New York Legislature approved a bill rewarding John M. Cronn with 1000 dollars for publicizing a supposed hydrophobia cure. Senate members including De Witt Clinton and Joseph C. Yates backed it, while the House añad amendments that were later dropped by a 65 to 20 vote. Governor Morgan and legal authorities backed the measure, though the bond to reclaim funds if the remedy failed remains unfound. The remedy prescribed odd ingredients and exposed the era’s credulity in upstate New York where a Hessian deserter prospered from public gullibility.
