The so called conference of Independent Republicans dissatisfied with the regular ticket failed in Price's opera house. About 400 attendees, mostly curious locals, heard speeches by Mayor Haskell and John M Price among others. Price refused candidacy unless Democrats nominated, and the meeting adjourned within an hour.

The Pacific Reunion Parade in San Francisco
San Francisco on August 3 hosted a massive Grand Army of the Republic parade with around 11 000 local delegates and 350 000 spectators. Eastern and southern banners drew loud cheers as General Sherman rode past, while the Zouaves and floral volley drew admiration. After the procession a rush to eateries caused doors to lock and some fainting incidents from hunger, as bread and meat shortages emerged despite large restaurant stocks. The day ended with a grand pavilion reception into the night.
