NHTSA faces questions over uncounted police chases
The agency reviews crashes not listed as chases, omitting at least 26 incidents in 2013 that killed 38 people. It questions coding standards, while officials stress the data guide safety policy. Researchers warn undercounting eases pressure to curb chases.

Police chase deaths counted differently by NHTSA in 2013
USA TODAY reports 101 deaths in police chases in 2013 were not counted as chase related by NHTSA. Many crashes lack chase notes on official crash reports, with chase details in separate files or releases. Officials cited gaps in recording practices and subjective definitions affecting counted fatalities.
