Same-sex couple seeks birth certificate in Kansas case
Jessica Smith and Casey Leeann Falmer Smith of Old West Lawrence sue the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to list both parents on their son’s birth certificate. They married in California in 2013 and say the state would automatically name both parents if they were a different gender. Their son was born Sept. 16 at Shawnee Mission Medical Center in Johnson County.
