Corn harvest struggles in Douglas County weather setback

Douglas County farmers report a slower than hoped fall corn harvest after weekend rain halted field work. Ottawa Co-op estimates only about 25 percent harvested before rain, with yields around 125 to 130 bushels per acre, 50 bushels below expectations. Nearby elevators are 50 to 80 percent full, storing grain on the ground. Prices were about 3.16 per bushel in Ottawa and Lawrence. Diplodia appears more due to wet conditions while optimism remains for soybeans to salvage the crop later in October.

Douglas County to seek proposals for energy audit

Douglas County Commissioners directed staff to issue requests for proposals to conduct an energy audit. Sustainability Office head Eileen Horn noted 21 projects since 2011, cutting energy use by 20 percent across seven county buildings and saving about $163,000 in 2015. Four buildings hit 30 percent savings, with future audits aimed at jail and youth services.
