A local social worker Mary Thomas flies today to San Juan Puerto Rico as a Red Cross volunteer for at least three weeks. Jo Byers says donations are being collected to aid hurricane victims in Puerto Rico the Virgin Islands and the U S East Coast. Make checks to American Red Cross marked Hurricane Hugo. KU seniors vie for Rhodes and Marshall scholarships
Kansas University seniors Angela Nonaka Brenda Eisele Brett Leopold Katy Monk appear as KU and Kansas nominees for Rhodes and Marshall Scholarship competitions. About 30 U.S. graduates win Rhodes Scholarships to Oxford and another 30 win Marshall Scholarships annually. It has been six years since a KU student earned a Rhodes and 1988 saw a KU Marshall recipient. Robert Hinrichs from Lincoln Nebraska is chosen to represent Nebraska in Rhodes.

Breakfast program serves up numbers at four Lawrence schools
Participation in the trial breakfast program at East Heights Kennedy New York and Woodlawn schools exceeded expectations with an average of 294 breakfasts daily. Fifty percent of students at New York eat breakfast at school while 21.6 percent at Kennedy and 50.3 percent at New York. Most meals go to children with free meal applications, followed by reduced price and full price limits.
