Three veteran Lawrence police sergeants James Haller Charles Greer and Ron Dalquest retire after 87 years of service. Haller 53 spent 27 years as detective Dalquest joined 1966 Greer began on the street and all say they leave healthy for retirement.

Mural plan OK’d by history commission in Lawrence
Guardians of the Arts win final Historic Resources Commission approval for a 375-square-foot mural on a downtown wall north of Johnson Furniture at 722 Mass. Work begins today in the arcade east of Massachusetts Street. The plan, tied to Harvest of Arts events Sept 24 to Oct 3, will be painted by 11 volunteers and completed by late October.

Carlin Announces Run for Congress in Kansas District
Former Kansas governor John Carlin declared his candidacy for the 2nd District seat being vacated by Jim Slattery. Slattery announced he is running for governor in 1994.
