WPA Relief Burden Shifts to Kansas Counties
Topeka on October 24 WPA officials said Kansas will likely receive about 15.6 million for WPA projects with capacity for only about 40 000 of the 62 000 work relief clients. As many as 22 000 could be added to county costs monthly 250 000 to 400 000. WPA faces debate over employable definitions as the program aims to hire a days work per worker while some unable to do heavy labor could still perform lighter tasks. The schedule envisions workers four eight hour days per week across six days with split shifts.
