Rainy Baldwin Maple Leaf festival kicks off with soggy parade

Saturday rain dampened Main Street but did not deter crowds at Baldwin's Maple Leaf festival. Despite drizzle, parade units including Baker University and Haskell Indians joined, crowds shopped and ate inside, Baker University homecoming activities continued with a 24 to 6 football win over Bethany, and Queen Kris Bolin was crowned at the homecoming dance. Gessner Hall dedication at Baker marked the weekend's events as better weather arrived Sunday for pony pulling contests and tours.

Open House At Lawrence Junior High Tonight

Parents of South and Central Junior High students may visit classrooms during open houses at 7:15 PM in the school gym and 7 to 9:30 PM at Central Junior High. Teachers will outline goals and projects while parents tour their child’s schedule. A KU student injured during a seizure is reported in good condition at Watkins Memorial Hospital. The Perry Lake level remains around 885.5 feet and daylight saving time ends this Sunday at 2 AM. A traffic signal at 15th and Town was restored after a weekend crash. vandals later stole parts, with estimated damage between 500 and 800 dollars. Officials suspect the culprits.

One Million Given To Black Group In Worcester

In Worcester Massachusetts the United Church of Christ approved a grant of 1 million dollars to the Massachusetts Black Ecumenical Commission. A 597 delegate annual meeting vote backed the board of directors decision. The board will vote November 19 on an initial 250 thousand dollar payment to the black church men's group, with disbursement planned early next year.

Ivan D. Rowe Dies Sunday in Lawrence Memorial Hospital

Lawrence resident for 37 years Ivan D Rowe died early Sunday at Lawrence Memorial Hospital after a week as a patient. A retired securities consultant and salesman he represented several firms in Lawrence including H O Peet. He served in World War I with the 12th Engineers and led the Dorsey Liberty American Legion post. Survivors include wife Elfriede Fischer Rowe daughter Mrs D Tom Jones and two grandsons cremation planned.
