A Washington White House gathering precedes a moratorium as President Nixon weighs public opinion on Vietnam. Cabinet members and top advisors briefed the president on national conditions, while off the record remarks hint at varied views on ending U.S. involvement.
Saturday column notes the No 1 job is to end the Vietnam War. Cabinet members want new programs but must wait for the war to end before full plans can run. The President seeks an accelerated withdrawal and a nationwide address to outline updated de Americanization plans and youth roles ahead of the nation’s 200th anniversary.
Police report a home burglary at 714 N Sixth where twelve $20 bills were stolen from a drawer between 9 30 a m and 3 30 p m Friday. A cement block window break at White's Texaco on Iowa 2200 yielded over $71 in cash, a register, a cigarette machine, and a desk ransacked. Three youths were caught attempting to break into a car at Ridglea Apartments. Other car thefts included stereos and tapes. Disturbance calls at local bars yielded no arrests.
The two opening performances of Summertree by Ron Cowen played to capacity at Swarthout Recital Hall Murphy Hall at Randa University. A third show is set for 8:20 p.m. today in the same recital hall. Tom Rea, assistant director, spoke on the play’s topical themes and popularity.
Norma Decker a Kansas University freshman from Tecumseh will be presented as sweetheart of the Lawrence DeMolay Chapter at the Conclave Ball in the Masonic Temple. The 27th annual Northeast Area Conclave of the Kansas State Association of the Order of DeMolay draws 15 chapters with activities from 9 am registrations to 8 30 pm ball and installation of new officers.
A car driven by Robert L. Brown Jr. 18 of 1800 Engel Rd. failed to stop at 6 30 p m Friday and struck the S W Grocery at 1228 E 28th Lawrence police report. Estimated damage to the building is 300 with no damage to the car. The vehicle struck near the front door and knocked the wall and door frame loose but did not enter. Another crash occurred about 12 25 a m Saturday when Ronald L. Barnard 28 of Toledo Ohio braked while a car slowed ahead and was rear ended by Tommy Jackson Jr. 18 of 1230 N J. Damage estimates are 250 for Barnard and 500 for Jackson. Both cars were eastbound.

Kingston jailed pending bond. He allegedly broke into Harry A. Puckett home at 1109 Del Friday about 915 a.m. arrested by Lawrence police. Other youths faced related cases including Walter Cool 17 bound over to district court on second degree burglary, Larry Devers 18 sent to Topeka to begin five to 10 year term after pleading guilty to Brooks Lunch break in. Devers case for Der Bierstube dismissed. Grand larceny charges against James Neer 43 dismissed. The report also notes a juvenile girl and a 19 year old companion arrested on marijuana charges near Lecompton with bond set for companion George J. Davis 20 of Long Island N Y.
Centenary Methodist Church to host Someday School and day care in its educational rooms starting Oct 27 with director LeRoy Chittenden. From 7:30 am to 5 pm daily, about 10 students to start, aiming to double by January. Plans include meals, play, and learning activities with potential federal tuition aids for children of working mothers.
The 1969 Lawrence United Fund drive kicks off Monday and runs through October 31, with a residential canvass to follow on November 28.
