The Black Mother program at East Heights School proves effective and will expand district wide. Mrs. Helen Blake told the School District 497 Board that extended watch hours and after-school activity drive participation and safety.
North Vietnamese troops killed seven Americans and wounded 18 in two fights near the Cambodian border north of Saigon. U S command said 16 enemy were killed. Helicopters were hit but returned to base as U S crews fought mortar and machine gun fire. Two Americans were killed on the ground and two wounded. two enemy bodies found. A later engagement 58 miles northwest of Saigon involved 150 North Vietnamese troops surprising U S 1st Air Cavalry with mortars and machine guns, killing five and wounding 13 before a 30 minute counterattack.
Up With People seeks lodging for 30 members arriving from Joplin Missouri for a three night stay with meals included before performances October 29 30 and November 1 at Lawrence High School. KU Band Day is November 1 during the KU Oklahoma State game. A Lawrence car show drew 100 cars and an estimated crowd over 5000 at the Malls Shopping Center.

Topeka Daily Capital reports Kansas Highway Patrol retired car lent to Robert H. Stratton, whose license was invalid from 1964 to 1969 when he finally passed a driving test. Woodson cited withdrawing use after the license check. Stratton denied driving without a valid license. Stratton worked in the governor's office screening applicants for boards and commissions.
The United States and Japan reached an understanding to return Okinawa to Tokyo by 1972 while keeping a U S military base on the island. Nuclear weapons would be removed, and Japan would assume primary defense with U S consultation on movements after June 1970. A joint statement is planned after the Sato-Nixon meeting November 19–21.
The Federal State Crop and Livestock Reporting Service said on Monday nearly one third more cattle and calves were on grain feed in Kansas Oct 1 than a year earlier. The number on feed reached 745000, up from 570000 last year and 618000 last July 1.

Byron Lee Curfman 19 and Charles Douglas Ellis 20, both KU juniors, were arrested Monday night on possession and control of marijuana charges. Bond set at 1500 each. Curfman held at Douglas County jail with arraignment today. Ellis surrendered after warrant talks. In separate action, Rob ert E Mansaw 31 Kansas City Kan pleaded guilty to attempted second degree burglary related to Traders Pawn Shop. Shoemaker also facing charges.
Kansas University's first Travel Fair launches with Leo Salovaara from Finland as a featured participant. The event includes talks at 7 p.m. in the Forum Room and showcases films booths and representatives from 20 tour groups firms and government entities. Irv Robinson and Tony Mossman led the organizing SUA Travel Board.
William McChesney Martin who will retire January 31 as Federal Reserve Board chair will address a joint meeting of directors and officers from the Kansas City and Dallas Fed banks and the three Kansas City branches in Omaha Denver and Oklahoma City. Dolph Simons will preside at the events.
Charles E. Banning longtime Douglas County sheriff and eight year county commissioner died Monday after a stroke. He was a farmer and local leader, survived by Myra his wife Warren a son Betty Mason daughter four grandchildren. Funeral Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church with burial at Oak Hill Cemetery.
