Daniel Chester French Dies Noted Sculptor of Minute Man
Daniel Chester French, dean of American sculptors, died at his home in Stockbridge Massachusetts after months of poor health. He created the Minute Man bronze statue unveiled at Concord in 1875 and the Uncle Jimmy Green statue in front of Green Hall. His career included works for New York Philadelphia St Louis and Boston buildings and statues in Washington including General Lewis Cass Calhoun and Herodotus in the Congressional Library. He also sculpted for the Chicago Columbian Exposition and the Abraham Lincoln statue in the Lincoln Memorial. On Harvard Square his bronze John Harvard statue is noted as thoroughly Puritan in character.
