Texas steers and native cattle move higher while cows and heifers soften. stockers and feeders support moderate gains. Hog sales steady to slightly higher with light and mixed classes mixed in price across regions.
Despatch from Ol Santiago De Cuba May 29 reports Commodore Schley and the flying squadron bottling the Spanish fleet in Santiago harbor. The Spaniards, lured by misread signals, entered the harbor where Brooklyn and other American ships observed the fleet. The report says Vizcaya and Oquendo may still be at large while U S forces prepare for invasion.
Joseph C. Thompson, assistant gardener on the Mohican, announces his engagement in a Brookly n letter to Mrs A Hutchinson of Hawaii, daughter of a rich Honolulu Chinese merchant Ah Fong. The Mohican lies in Honolulu since March 19, and Thompson says he fell in love with her after meeting her, eldest of 18 daughters each worth $1,000,000. The sisters are pursued by numerous suitors in Honolulu society.
Key West May 30 reports from naval scout ships indicate the exact location of Cervera's fleet. The American fleet commander faces a decisive move, either to bottle up the Spanish squadron or force the passage and strike at the anchorage within three to four days.
